Single-walled tents are prone to condensation. However, I have not had major condensation issues with the Lunar Solo. In 2019, SMD redesigned the top vent to improve airflow and increase durability. There is a full perimeter noseeum netting between the bathtub floor and shelter walls. The Lunar Solo is designed to pull in cold air from the bottom and vent warmer air out the top. Easy to pitch

Ok, ya’ll. I hope I haven’t bored you yet with this article because the last tent on my list is *excellent.* The one thing I’d change about my tent is that I wish it were a one-person tent rather than a two-person one. The Skyscape Scout is a fantastic option between a tarp and a tent. The hybrid design gives you plenty of space, a good level of protection and all at a relatively low weight. This is an absolute bargain for anyone looking for a different shelter to get out and explore in. I’ll say this though, the design of the vestibule door does seem to help to extend the life of the outer zip, as it’s easy to zip the door down with very little tension on the zipper itself and then slide down the little guy-line knot to give it tension once it’s fully closed. Typically, when I have a zipper fail, it’s an area that tensions using the zip itself, so this design is an improvement over many. One quirk with the vestibule door is that the little nylon loops it uses to attach to the apex guy-line can be fussy to attach in any condition and especially so when your hands are freezing. The Skyscape Trekker has a very well-designed floating bathtub floor. I have found that the bathtub floor pitches perfectly every time. The floor “floats,” reducing stress on the materials and minimizing punctures. I have never had a puncture despite not using a ground sheet. SMD sells a lightweight polypro groundsheet for those who want extra protection. Peak Height

On one of our test trips, Miles was using the superficially similar Mountain Laurel Designs Solomid XL, which he went on to review. We therefore got to see the Solomid XL and the Lunar Solo side-by-side over a number of nights and, while I won’t speak for Miles, my impression was that the Lunar Solo took significantly fewer steps to set up since the floor and mesh elements are integrated with the tent body. Of course, that means that you can’t use the Lunar Solo as just the pyramid outer skin. To me, that’s an acceptable limitation of the Lunar Solo in exchange for a pitch that can be ready to sleep in after a handful of minutes, though, as I’ll return to in a moment, it takes practice to get to that point. It seemed that Miles had to tweak and fiddle with the removable inner elements of the Solomid a fair bit. I’m not judging his considerable campcraft, it appeared to be a difference intrinsic to the two differing approaches of the two tents. Single Wall MSR also designed the Hubba Hubba with a rain gutter on the rain fly and a StayDry door, which is a little flap covering the zipper to keep rain out. The tent pitches all at once, which is great for keeping the rain out of the inside if you’re scrambling to set up as a storm rolls in (a common occurrence in the Andes). This is a clear advantage over many of the dome-style tents from larger brands, where setup can be a scramble to limit the water that breaches the interior. Mountain Hardwear is a high-end outdoor brand; you can expect this tent to perform well. This double-walled tent has ¾ mesh on the tent body for optimum star gazing. Stakes included: 0 (I used six MSR Groundhogs and two Nemo Airpins for the optional guylines during testing) – here’s why a lightweight Y-stake like the MSR Groundhog and Groundhog Mini offers the best tent stake holding power for its weight and size)

Most sane folks want to camp in summer when the weather is warm. If this is you, look for a tent with design features that suit summer weather. The North Face Stormbreak 1 is one of the best one-person tents for hot weather because half of its body is mesh. You can sleep comfortably on clear summer nights with maximum ventilation. The Lunar Solar has a very well-designed floating bathtub floor. I have found that the bathtub floor pitches perfectly every time. The floor “floats,” reducing stress on the materials and minimizing punctures. I have never had a puncture despite not using a ground sheet. SMD sells a lightweight polycro groundsheet for those who want extra protection. Internal Gear Storage Area Used extensively by Cairngorm Treks from late summer to early winter 2018, throughout the Cairngorms and surrounding areas.

The vestibule is set on the long side of the tent to maximize views and ventilation when fully open. Close it and you've got phenomenal protection from the worst storms.

I have used the Lunar Solo in high winds, rain, and snow. It has performed great in extreme conditions. The Hubba Hubba minimizes this problem with enough mesh on the inner tent to make it breathable while avoiding significant leaks. And now the elephant in the room… The Lunar Solo is a hybrid single-wall tent, which means that while you’re completely protected from precipitation via the SilPoly outer shell and bugs via the integrated mesh, there is no layer of mesh to act as a buffer between you and the potentially cold and damp embrace of the outer canopy. The Lunar Solo is an ultralight tent at just one pound, ten ounces, but it’s got an ample living space (26 square feet) and an adjustable peak height of up to 48 inches. There is also lots of gear storage space in the 8.5 square feet vestibule.Six Moon Designs was one of the first tent manufacturers to convert from silnylon to a 100% silicone-coated polyester material (silpoly). The Lunar Solo has been manufactured with silpoly since 2019. The Silpoly used by SMD has a hydrostatic head of 3,000mm, which means that the fabric can withstand a 3-meter column of water; 1,400mm is the minimum to be considered waterproof. We recommend tents be a minimum of 2,000mm. The Lunar Solo's distinctive low hexagonal shape easily spills the wind no matter the direction. Short, steeply sloped sides, handle snow or high winds with ease. A generous canopy covers a 2.4 sq. m sleeping area plus 0.8 sq. m of vestibule storage. The 49" peak height, set in the middle of the tent maximizes room for sitting and taking care of chores.
