My only complaint about this book and the reason that I couldn't give this book a 5 star rating is the writing style. This story is told in verse and I don’t always expect for the poems to still be “poetic”, but these really were. I loved it and only wish it were a bit longer so we could see Michael as he continued to grow and understand his identity!This book felt both quiet and ferociously loud and proud at the same time, tackling deep emotions and giving me frequent goosebumps. I went into this book knowing that it was an LGBTQ+ book written in verse, but I knew little else about it until I cracked open that first page and fell in love with this book. It is a wonderfully honest and moving read - perfect for fans of Elizabeth Acevedo and Sarah Crossan. Aleman’s narrative joins the ranks of heart-wrenching stories of migrant families who have been separated.
