The book places special emphasis on the feeding of babies and children to ensure optimal development during their crucial growing years. Coming soon: a series on genuine Southern cooking and a series on fermented foods from around the world–plus my heretical thoughts on feeding babies. Eugenics promoted the “directed evolution of man” made possible by a global scientific and medical dictatorship, which proposed to improve the lot of mankind by making “better” people, rather than resolving the conditions that led to poverty and ill health. The authors state in the introduction, “Children are more likely to eat food they’ve helped prepare. So the book concentrates on promoting animal fats and fermented foods in addition to vegetables/fruits and some grains.

If you can’t find Anaheim I think that Poblano would work as they are almost as large but unlike other peppers, they are both not hot. She talks a lot about culturing foods to encourage enzyme growth which promotes good digestion and gut flora. As the authors list and explain the simple tools needed to prepare the traditional food recipes in the cookbook, Eisenbart adds the drawings that bring them to life. So I rely on my common sense and my powers of observation of myself and those around me - of what effects I see or feel with different dietary variables and what kind of diet I provide myself and my family. I am a vegetarian, and it's important to note that Fallon does not endorse vegetarianism, nor is the text limited to meat-free recipes (by any means! The authors point out that growing bodies need lots of vitamins, minerals, healthy fat, protein and other nutrients. I'm not going to tell my kids they can't have cake made with refined sugar and/or HFCS when all the other kids are. I took it home and made my special scrambled egg dish that consists of 2 eggs, beaten with some milk, then scrambled in olive oil. As a child I lived in the city, playing outside, watching a lot of tv and chasing down the ice cream truck until my dad remarried when I was 8 and we moved to a small farm.

She has three beautiful grandchildren, all brought up according to Nourishing Traditions® principles. If it convinces people to eat healthier, to eat closer to nature, that's a good thing, but I was turned off by the didactic, lectury tone and the wacky conspiracy theorist smell. I do appreciate the way Fallon points out that extreme diets are never a good idea; I feel that we Americans are looking for the one quick way to solve all our health issues, and if one extreme diet can do that, we jump right on. I would also love to look into the books mentioned in the bibliography and read several of those, they sounded fascinating.

It provides a wealth of information on the nutritional benefits of various foods, traditional cooking methods, and the dangers of processed foods. She says the mess and extra time spent is worth the investment so we can raise radiantly healthy children who know how to cook healthy foods themselves. And it's not the weight loss because even when I was terribly thin I didn't have quite the same definition.Once you open your eyes to the longer timeline of people and food, you can begin to see where our modern foods come from and all the compromises we have made. It is apparent that a previous reviewer has not thoroughly read the book, and seems to be laying on as much 'propaganda' in her review as she accuses the authors of doing in their book. I also think her suggestions on soaking grains to make them more digestible (especially for children) are dead on.

The first chapter of her book is so right on target that I feel a little guilty for taking her ideas. Don't worry if you are vegetarian; while Fallon focuses much of her time on meats, there is plenty of other information to be gleaned from this volume. She also includes recipes for obscure and old-fashioned dishes and drinks like small beer, liver and onions, and Yorkshire pudding.I personally do better with a little meat in my diet, along with eggs and a little yogurt - I think meat should be eaten sparingly and without wastefulness, but my health is better, and my family's health is better when I include it - even sparingly - not much is needed. As weird as this book is, I have had it for 3 days and I have made 5 recipes out of it already: yogurt cream cheese, whey, carrot kim chee, dill pickles, bean sprouts. I’ve been involved in the field of nutrition and health for many years, and I’ve seen various weird diets come and go.
