Also told in second person, the story, which was the shortest in the collection, was really very relatable.

My Monticello - Wikipedia

She is also hunkering down amidst all this violence with her current boyfriend, grandmother and her ex, which gives rise to multiple issues during the story. a gorgeous, devastating collection of stories spotlighting the ways a life, a country, and a planet can tend toward disaster but still be worth fighting for. Our narrator, Da'Naisha Love, escapes the violence and finds a momentary refugee in Monticello, which happens to be Thomas Jefferson's historic plantation. To set the novel in Monticello is a symbolic master stroke, for what it represents and stands for in the world of Then of Jefferson and what is unfolding in the Now.Having them all be able to touch and use history, and through those objects think about the whole situation in a different way. Alongside her are strangers, her white boyfriend, her elderly grandmother, and other people from her neighbourhood.

My Monticello by Jocelyn Nicole Johnson review - The Guardian

Tensions run high and various members within the group inevitably find themselves disagreeing over what to do. Although Da’Naisha questions the future of her own relationship, she eventually reveals to Knox that she is pregnant. In 2017, a white supremacist drove his car headlong into a peaceful group opposing a Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, killing a young woman, Heather Heyer, and injuring dozens of others. Roxane Gay has already championed the amazing first story in the collection, "Control Negro," but personally I loved "Virginia is Not Your Home" best in the collection. First of all, what a powerful yet also very poignant debut which not only makes you think but also feel something deep inside. Soon enough, angry white zealots clutching “metal canisters” and swinging “torches topped in flames” descend on her mostly Black neighbourhood, setting homes ablaze.

I’ve had classes where all kinds of people who might not otherwise have a lot in common create some sort of relationship and unity. This interview is a sort of homecoming for Johnson, whose first published short story “Control Negro” appeared in Guernica after our editors read it in the slush. One of her neighbours teases her about the connection: “So y’all are like hood royalty or something”? Overall, Johnson has constructed an arrangement of stories that are rather impactful with a wide range of mood, style, and subject.Johnson: I’ve been a public school art teacher for many years, so that is my bread and butter: a bunch of people who are different and don’t really want to be in the same room, but are. Tough-minded, vulnerable, and brave, Jocelyn Nicole Johnson’s precisely imagined debut explores burdened inheritances and extraordinary pursuits of belonging. We also see, in “My Monticello,” glimpses of what has occurred, including the Unite the Right rally and the murder of Heather Heyer. How would the group deal with the impending storm of racists, determined that they should vacate the building, and what resolution would we get about the father of Da’Naisha’s child.

My Monticello: THE most powerful read of summer 2022

The refugees fleeing from violent white supremacists establish a settlement in the home their ancestors were forced to build. In “Control Negro”, narrated by Levar Burton in the audio version, an aging African American man recounts what happens when he plans to plot out the life of a black youth in a way that makes his position in the world a perfect parallel for a young white man in the same circumstances. While I appreciated Da'Naisha’s piercing commentary, I did find her, and every other character, to be very paper-thin.
