About this deal

It is not an intimate, political diary in the tradition of Chips Channon or even Tony Benn, revealing little about the personality of the author, and despite its title it reveals few secrets. Mr Michel has faced considerable criticism as a result of the diplomatic mishap, with many suggesting he should have refused to sit down. Barnier spends a vast amount of his time keeping member states on side, travelling endlessly to capitals and engaging with ministers. He acknowledged that his attachment and understanding deepened as he visited both parts of Ireland during the negotiations, singling out a meeting with the Northern Ireland Rural Women's Network in Dungannon in 2018.

Stefaan De Rynck had a ringside seat for all the twists and turns of Britain's departure from the European Union. In October 2020, David Frost cancelled negotiations and refused to resume them unless the EU publicly changed its position and recognised UK “sovereignty”. He said his British counterparts never fully understood that the need to keep all the member states on the same page strengthened his negotiating hand rather than weakening it.

He understands better than others the consequences of Brexit and he seeks to limit its negative effects. The last three paragraphs seem to list the lines of a potential campaign by listing the main themes: "Let us rediscover the foundations of our Republic: education, respect for authority, social justice (. The row has broken out amid speculation that ministers are at war over the controversial Northern Ireland Protocol. In 2006–2007, he served as member of the Amato Group, a group of high-level European politicians unofficially working on rewriting the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe into what became known as the Treaty of Lisbon following its rejection by French and Dutch voters. Mr Barnier thinks he got the last laugh though: "He knows that I know that until the last moment he wanted to bypass me by seeking to open a parallel negotiating line with the cabinet of President Ursula von der Leyen.

Nicolas Bay was speaking in the wake of the European Commission President’s ill-fated visit to Ankara, during which she was forced to sit on a nearby sofa while Mr Erdogan and Charles Michel, President of the European Council, took the only two allocated chairs. Ursula von der Leyen only has herself to blame for her "sofagate humiliation", and has blown whatever credibility she had by copying up to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a French MEP has said. Boris Johnson meets Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, in London last year. There are reasons to listen to the popular feeling that expressed itself then, and continues to express itself in many parts of Europe – and to respond to it. From 2015, Barnier served as unpaid special adviser on European defence policy to President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.

uk, Ms Mcbride warned the EU could be under pressure as it faces US competition to supply the UK in agriculture and food. Britain tilted hopelessly at trying to change that sequence and tied its hands early on by setting out its red lines. From the mood in the room to the technical discussions, he gives an unvarnished account of the deliberations and obstacles that shaped the final deal. Earlier this month PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Jonathan Roberts warned that the violence “was at a scale we haven't seen in Belfast or further afield in Northern Ireland for a number of years”. Reading it not only makes for better understanding of Brexit but of the EU itself and – dare I say – of the post-Brexit UK.

Even if I try to avoid during this negotiation with the British any kind of emotion of passion – I think the line was to take into account the fact, the legal reality, the interest of EU – you cannot put in the corner human relations when you are in politics. The reader is indeed carried away in the midst of Michel Barnier's negotiation tables, private discussions, breakfasts, and other plane trips. There must be no surprise because it's exactly what I said for four years in each and every press conference in Brussels or in London.
