There were several Discordian newsletters written in the 1960s, and several Discordian members wrote for the underground press in various parts of the country.

The plot meanders around the globe to such locations as Las Vegas (where a potentially deadly, secret U. There was no specific division of labor in the collaborative writing process, although Shea's writing tended towards melodrama, while Wilson's parts tended towards satire. The trilogy comprises three parts which contain five books and appendices: The Eye in the Pyramid (first two books), The Golden Apple (third and part of fourth book), Leviathan (part of fourth and all of fifth book, and the appendices). The books became such a surprise cult success that they were made into a stage play in Liverpool, launching the careers of British actors Bill Nighy and Jim Broadbent. Massenhausen's enthusiasm soon became a liability in the eyes of Weishaupt, often resulting in attempts to recruit unsuitable candidates. On 1 May 1776, Weishaupt and four students formed the Perfectibilists, taking the Owl of Minerva as their symbol. His new approach would, he claimed, make the Illuminati more attractive to prospective members in the Protestant princedoms of Germany. There are even parts in the book in which the narrative reviews and jokingly deconstructs the work itself.

The trilogy was translated and published in German, again both as separate volumes (the three covers of which formed a triptych) and an omnibus. By establishing masonic relations with the Union lodge in Frankfurt, affiliated to the Premier Grand Lodge of England, lodge Theodore became independently recognised and able to declare its independence. The frustration of the German mystics led to their enrolling Count Kollowrat with the Illuminati with a view to later affiliation. In a new book, Under the Eye of Power, cultural historian Colin Dickey argues that our hunger for conspiracy theories is less fringe and more mainstream than we like to admit. From the 1692 Salem witch trials to the American Revolution (thought by some to be a conspiracy organised by the French), from the satanic panic to the Illuminati and QAnon, it has been tempting to dismiss conspiracy theories as an aberration, resonating with a small and marginal segment of the population. To disseminate misinformation through all portals – through counter culture, through the mainstream media, through whatever means. When the next one comes along – because there will be a next one – maybe we’ll be able to get out ahead of it a little bit faster. With the departure of Massenhausen, Zwack immediately applied himself to recruiting more mature and important recruits.

Knigge appeared at this time to believe in the "Most Serene Superiors" which Weishaupt claimed to serve. On the way, he managed to have an argument with a Frenchman on the subject of a lady with whom they were sharing a carriage. In a 1994 interview for FringeWare Review, Wilson suggested he may even "do a Son of Illuminatus later". There are also references to Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49 and his Gravity's Rainbow, an equally enormous experimental novel concerning liberty and paranoia that was published two years prior to Illuminatus!Rand is also disparaged in one of the appendices concerning property, ostensibly written by Hagbard, which serves as an explanation of anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon's views on the subject. Provided with material by Weishaupt, Knigge now produced pamphlets outlining the activities of the outlawed Jesuits, purporting to show how they continued to thrive and recruit, especially in Bavaria. The books were written at the height of the late 1960s, and are infused with the popular counterculture ideas of that time. It all began somewhere amid the Summer of Love and the hippie phenomenon, when a small, printed text emerged: Principia Discordia. It’s an idealistic means of getting people to wake up to the suggested realities that they inhabit – which of course didn’t happen quite in the way they were hoping.

I began to see a pattern emerge whereby there’s almost a template for fears of secret societies, of this invisible, undetectable group that is nonetheless doing terrible things behind the scenes. Then there is the “great replacement” theory, pushed by rightwing figures such as Tucker Carlson, which describes a supposed elite conspiracy to change the demographics of the US by replacing white people with people of colour, immigrants and Muslims. The religious-minded have hardened their hearts and minds against this “greater portion” in spite of our efforts. The author also sheds light on attacks on Catholics in the 19th century, driven by a prejudice among Protestants that they were beholden only to a foreign pope and could not act as fully enlightened American citizens. I’m here to tell you as well that you are your own Satan and evil can’t possibly interfere more in your life than what you’re already doing to yours
