Now with a massively successful US tour opening for sweet soul darlings Thee Sacred Souls behind him, 2023 is sure to be a propitious year for Daptone's newest signee.There's some sibilance in the vocals (also present on the repress), but the digital version also has it to some extent, so I think he recorded the album with a hot mike and the vinyl just emphasises it a tad. He's carrying on tradition, defined as: "When it's real, you do it even without a recording contract. But overall it surprisingly does, proving the quality of the material in music and lyrical content, and on more than one occasion I've been blown away by the whole thing, having some water in my eyes. I question why Nas would choose this orchestra, who at times play like 5 year old kids bashing instruments. Jazz also permeates the albums most essential cuts, with The Ahmad Jamal-sampling, boom-bap classic "The World Is Yours" remaining a stand out track. The enduring vision of Nas: a baby-faced Buddha monk in public housing, scribbling lotto dreams and grim reaper nightmares in dollar notebooks, words enjambed in the margins. There was no real follow-up to Illmatic because Nas understood that he'd tapped into a moment that could only come once and in one place.

Often cited as one of the best hip-hop albums of the '90s, 'Illmatic' is the undisputed classic upon which Nas' reputation rests. The F Line, pre-Giuliani, packed with rats and villains, foreigners and flummoxed out-of-towners, beggars, bandits, and sweating working stiffs. Nas displays true lyrical genius, sending home every bar with perfect execution, whilst remaining fresh in every way.
