About this deal

You can watch the entire documentary in one sitting, or select from a list of self-explanatory chapters including "Evolution of the Story," "Directing the Voice Sessions," "Making Puppets," "Coraline's Closet," "Setting the Stage," "I've Seen Fire and I've Seen Fog," "The Eyes Have It," "It's Alive," and "Wrapping Up Coraline. Coraline” was a 2009 stop-motion animated film, based on the 2002 novella [of the same title] written by Neil Gaiman. Clearly her voice is still young, and needed to be so; there is that childlike wonder and incessant chatter, whether it is chastising Wybie, impinging on her parent’s time, or steeling against ‘other mother’, and she showed a talent that was far beyond her years.

Deleted Scenes – Selick introduces a selection of deleted scenes explaining why each was removed (due to pacing or overstatement) but all amount to only a few seconds except for one ‘new’ scene dubbed ‘Buggy Flowers’. Even so, those who do plow through the entire 3D experience will be rewarded with at-times amazing depth of field and lifelike dimensionality.Almost two years since 'Coraline' first appeared in high definition, Universal brings the highly-imaginative stop-motion film to the 3D realm. Even when Selick's stomach-turning imagery is at its most hideous, an unwavering, nearly indescribable beauty graces every sinister garden, mangled monster, and decrepit tunnel that appears on screen. Then we come to the cat, a being able to exist in both the real and the other world, to come and go as it likes, but you never really know its motivations – cats are like that. Henry Selick made a big name for himself when he released Nightmare Before Christmaswith Tim Burton, cementing his name into the dark stop-motion animated realm of children's stories.

Sure, this story as a movie could have been done in CG animation but it would have never been as cool as it was in stop-motion. This “other” world is much more appealing to a young girl than the dull reality where her parents ignore her, so she decides to enjoy it. Both discs are housed inside a wonderfully painted steelbook that features new artwork of Coraline escaping the alternate dark universe with all of the scary characters. It's a flawless presentation that will amaze audiences and one that will stand toe-to-toe with any Pixar title available. In fact, during my second trip through Selick's mesmerizing tour de force, I found myself pausing scene after scene to do some exploring of my own. It’s now so much clearer and the addition of HDR (high dynamic range) makes the overall color timing as it should have originally been but technology wouldn’t allow for when it was released to home video. Combining that with the distinctive look given to the puppet and you have a very endearing character. Accompanying the great 3D picture quality of 'Coraline,' this lossless track is simply amazing, offering audiences a terrific and immersive aural experience that matches perfectly the fantastical elements of the film. The new 2160p UHD image is dazzling and the new Dolby Atmos audio track is completely immersive and wonderful. The Making of Coraline (HD, 36 minutes): This thorough documentary wastes little time with formalities, digging directly into Selick's pre-production meetings, the animation itself, the cast's voiceover sessions, and the finishing touches put on the film.

Coraline (Blu-ray Disc, 2009, 2-Disc Set, Collectors Edition

aspect ratio, the picture arrives with pitch-perfect contrast levels, providing wonderful clarity and visibility of things in the distance as well as in close-ups. The stunningly consistent three-dimensional video is awash with a fine veneer of grain, providing the image with a beautiful and appreciably filmic quality.

I do wish more time was devoted to analyzing the differences and similarities between the book and the film, but it doesn't look as if Gaiman has nearly as much to say about things as Selick. Those black button eyes and clay dark hair look exquisite and are distinguishable from other dark corridors and hallways. Voicing the Characters (HD, 11 min) - A self-explanatory featurette that has Selick and the cast members talking about their experiences working on the film, the various characters, and developing unique voices for each. Review System: Denon AVR-X4300H, MK Sound LCR750 and SUR55T, XTZ S2 Atmosphere ceiling mounted, SVS PB-12 Ultra.
