Description

This is fitting to an almost cinematic narrative level because the IE 900 was revealed at the same time as the news that the company's consumer division had been sold offbroke, as per the announced intention to do so earlier in the year. The nature of this sale is not a ‘clean break’ and Sennheiser looks like it will be involved in the development of future product but, until we know how that truly works in practice, what you see here is very likely the last of the Sennheiser home audio division products developed in the ‘old way.’ These detachable buds attach to the included cable via gold-plated Fidelity+ MMCX connectors, which allow for a 360-degree swivel of each of the buds as well as the ability to swap out the included cabling to your preferred choice of MMCX compatible cable. Full disclosure: Sennheiser sent me a sample IE 300 for review in exchange for my honest opinion, without any deadlines or expectations. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own, so feel free to PM me should you have any questions or comments about your own preferences or experiences.

This may sound like I’m calling the Sennheiser IE 300 “one note” simplistic earphones. They aren’t, but I hear more complicated and nuanced imaging from earphones and headphones that are significantly worse in most other respects. These earphones also have a little more mid-bass than I’d usually expect from an “audiophile” pair, which reduces their transparency a bit. The issue with the silicon tips may be a result of a slight warping of their shape, which was the state we found them in out of the box, but this is likely to be an experience that varies user to user, as is often the case with in-ear fit.

Does the Sennheiser IE 300 block noise?

The company has refined the 7mm ‘Extra Wide Band’ drive unitalso, as well as the chamber-within-a-chamber structure that helps manage airflow in an effort to produce a defined bass and equally satisfying midrange. One of the first things I came across was Frank Zappa’s 1969 album Hot Rats in 24/192 resolution. It makes no sense to digitize an analog recording from more than 50 years ago at a resolution that high, but there it is. Plus, the album has one of my all-time favorite Zappa tunes, “Peaches en Regalia,” which a friend in high school transcribed from the record and arranged for our big band. It was difficult to play, but really fun! It also has an effect on how the Sennheiser IE 300 present music – or the sound field/soundstage, if you want to think of it in a different way.

We’ve of course featured and reviewed many Sennheiser products here on HFN. My personal favorite Sennheiser headphones are the HD 800 S, the HD 650 (on tubes) and the HD 660S. I’m a Sennheiser fan and I’m not ashamed at all to tell you that. My sound signature preference: My preference is to have a great soundstage where the bass is impactful and delivers a punch that I can “feel” but does not over power the rest of the frequencies allowing for me to hear everything. Separation is important as well. The better tuned/balanced sound, the better. Disclaimer: The Sennheiser IE 300 IEM was sent to us by Sennheiser directly, in exchange for our honest review. Sennheiser is not related to Headfonia in any way. SennheiserMoving on to chamber music, I listened to “Gagliarda del Principe de Venosa” by Carlo Gesualdo, one of my favorite renaissance composers, as performed by Les Récréations on the album Scarlatti Sonate a Quattro at 24/96. The ensemble includes two violins, one viola, and one cello that are joined by a lute for this selection. I could easily distinguish each instrument clearly on the IE 300, which produced a delicate, well-balanced, open sound.
