About this deal

Written by Brian Clemens and Dennis Spooner, All about Murder takes place in the writing studio at the Oxfordshire country home of Nigel Forbes, played by David Callister. The older characters, however, are more convincingly rendered, and Tom Chambers makes for a strong leading man. As the play becomes increasingly disturbing and surreal, he provides an emotional anchor for the audience and manages to capture Danny’s increasing sense of anguish and paranoia.

I am sorry that, to me, this reads like an over elaborate creative writing exercise. Or maybe an attempt at parody. I do think some readers will enjoy it. But not for me, disappointingly. On October 11 and 12, English Touring Opera will return to the Theatre Royal with Handel’s Amadigi, based on a chivalric romance about three young people imprisoned by a sorceress. He was taken to prison again after that where he smashed a water jug and proceeded to cut his feet with it to ‘purge away his sins’ whilst claiming he was the ‘Supreme Being’. After some time, he got well again and escaped to Calais, where he then took a boat to Dover, arriving in London in September 1795. It is part of the zeitgeist of contemporary film and theatre that we start expecting one thing then find we are presented with quite another. If you keep an open mind you will enjoy Murder in the Dark. The occasion was the opening night of All About Murder at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham – a Tabs production and part of the Colin McIntyre Classic Thriller Season which is a regular annual feature on the calendar and never disappoints. The rollercoaster plot was farce at its very best. It’s a play that may surprise those who’ve read the book. Director Philip Franks said, “Horror films have been my guilty pleasure since I was a morbid child. Now is the time to find out whether many years’ worth of jump scares and terrible nightmares can be put to good use. We’ll also see whether my more adult theory – that horror often puts its finger on what worries us most as a society at any given time – will also hold true.“

Samuel Collings’ television work includes The Lost Pirate Kingdom, Hex and Outlander. On stage, his credits include The Great Murder Mystery, and Othello and Macbeth at HOME Manchester and Lyric Hammersmith. He last performed at the Theatre Royal Bath in Waiting For God in 2017. Taz Munyaneza recently performed in Our Lady Of Kibeho at Theatre Royal Stratford East and the television series The One. Philip Cairns’ recent credits include Call The Midwife on BBC1 and, on stage, Cyrano de Bergerac in the West End, Peer Gynt at the National Theatre and Pressure which toured to Bath in 2018.There were times during the performance when couples in the audience turned their heads from the stage to grin at each other as they identified with quarrels taking place on stage. The book has all the hallmarks of an excellent story. The theatre world in particular, lends itself to colourful characters, secrets and intrigue. I was also drawn to the beautiful book cover and the fact it was labelled “A Christmas Mystery”, looking forward to a seasonal escape from reality. David Callister and Susan Earnshaw are well cast as Nigel Forbes and Maxine Goodman, one a bumptious extrovert who thinks it is time to end their writing partnership, the other an irrational bundle of energy who is easily led.

Director Jake Smith says: “Sleepy Hollow is undoubtedly one of the greatest horror stories ever written and a tour de force to stage. The production has at its heart the power of nomadic storytelling and gathering round the campfire for a good ghost story. It is an important story for now as we look at conversations around the identity of nations, communities and humankind throughout the world.” Coronation Street alumni Wendi Peters and Bill Ward will star in Philip Meeks’s stage adaptation of The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow This cookie is used by Issuu analytic system to gather information regarding visitor activity on Issuu products.Murder at the Theatre Royale has a small cast: there's Scrooge, played by the leading man; one actor playing all the ghosts; then Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim, plus a couple of theatrical agents, a stage manager and his bohemian scriptwriter sister. There’s also the gentle fun of one of Agatha Christie's finest stage plays, Spider's Web, and the classic ‘will he get away with it?’ from Emlyn Williams, Night Must Fall. Summer just wouldn't be summer without a classic thriller.” Delving into the underbelly of 1930s’ London life, this New Adventures show invites audiences to step inside The Midnight Bell, a tavern where one particular lonely hearts club gathers to play out lovelorn affairs of the heart: bitter comedies of longing, frustration, betrayal and redemption. I was excited to read this book - I enjoy a good cosy crime and love 'period' stories. The cover is also very good and the title straight forward and telling it as it is. And I was not disappointed with the plot. There were several red herrings and plot twists and the story has a feisty female lead who has something to prove and her work cut out to get things right. but since almost every character is described in this way : age, height, hair etc it becomes tedious. In the home of the restless ghost of the Grey Lady, world premieres by Emma Rice, Matthew Bourne and Tonderai Munyevu will be complemented by scary appearances by horror favourites Dracula, The Hound Of the Baskervilles and the Headless Horseman.A failing marriage is the perfect motive for murder and so it proved in this critically acclaimed stage hit. Andrew Ryan who directs is a veteran of 31 pantos and brings out all the humour of the play without sacrificing tension. Investigating his first murder case, he consults Kamila, a prostitute with psychic powers who just happens to be Victor’s go-to hooker, a part carried off with great aplomb by Simona Armstrong. Owen Oakeshott ’s theatre credits include Witness for the Prosecution (London County Hall); Taming of the Shrew , A Midsummer Night’s Dream , Two Gentlemen of Verona (Guildford Shakespeare Company); A Day in the Death of Joe Egg , Wars of the Roses (Rose Theatre Kingston); Market Boy , The Royal Hunt of the Sun (National Theatre); Roots (Manchester Royal Exchange); Way Upstream (Derby Playhouse); Antony and Cleopatra , Timon of Athens , The General from America , Henry VI parts 1, 2 and 3 , Richard III (Royal Shakespeare Company); The Iceman Cometh (Almeida Theatre); An Inspector Calls (West End).
