Siegel, Elaine V., ed. (1992). Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Women. New York, NY: Brunner/Mazel, Inc. ISBN 0-87630-655-5. Thumbelina tries to protect herself from the elements. When winter comes, she is in desperate straits. She is finally given shelter by an old field mouse and tends her dwelling in gratitude. Thumbelina sees a swallow who is injured while visiting a mole, a neighbor of the field mouse. She meets the swallow one night and finds out what happened to him. She keeps on visiting the swallow during midnight without telling the field mouse and tries to help him gain strength and she frequently spends time with him singing songs and telling him stories and listening to his stories in the winter until spring arrives. The swallow, after becoming healthy, promises that he would come to that spot again and flies away saying goodbye to Thumbelina. But ‘Croak croak, brek-kek-kex,’ was all the toad’s son said when he saw Thumbelina. ‘Shhh! Don’t speak so loudly. You might wake her,’ his mother said. ‘We must put her somewhere where she cannot escape. I know,’ she said, when she had thought for a time. ‘I’ll put her on a water lily out in the stream.’ Please, may I have a piece of barleycorn to eat,’ Thumbelina begged the field-mouse. ‘I have had nothing to eat for two days.’‘You poor thing,’ said the field-mouse, who had a kind heart. ‘Come inside! Come inside!’ The field-mouse so enjoyed Thumbelina’s company that she told her she could stay. ‘But you must clean my house and tell me stories,’ she said.’ I like to listen to stories.’ Farewell, bright sun!’ she cried, stretching out her arms towards it, and taking another step outside the house; for now the corn had been reaped, and only the dry stubble was left standing. ‘Farewell, farewell!’ she said, and put her arms round a little red flower that grew there. ‘Give my love to the dear swallow when you see him!’

Short story by Hans Christian Andersen

Don’t speak so loud, or she will wake up,” said the old toad. “She might run away from us, for she is as light as swansdown. We will put her out in the brook upon one of the broad water-lily leaves. That will be just like an island for her, she is so small and light!

The 2002 animated film The Adventures of Tom Thumb and Thumbelina is loosely based on the fairy tale. [13] Mattel's Barbie: Thumbelina from 2009 was also presented as a modern retelling of the story, while its plot has little-to-nothing to do with Andersen's tale. [14]

I am not objecting this thing. I know that's the part of writing. But these things make me little upset. I don't know why. Santa and The Ice Cream Bunny': Strange holiday entertainment from the 1970s|Movies & TV|standard.net". Archived from the original on 2020-06-17 . Retrieved 2023-04-26. As a storyteller, Hans Christian Andersen shows taste for the tragic and horrible, even when he was infatuated with the sweet and romantic in "Thumbelina". Poor Thumbelina is abduction by hideous creatures that do not have a sense of her grace and proper nature. However, her patience and striving for true love rewarded in the end when she reaches the end of its tribulations. Me han enamorado por completo las ilustraciones. Se nota que el autor siente una total conexión y armonía con la historia, porque siento que de otra manera sus imágenes no hubieran sido tan indicadas y perfectas. She was pleased with Thumbelina, so she said, “You are quite welcome to stay with me all the winter, if you like; but you must keep my rooms clean and neat, and tell me stories, for I shall like to hear them very much.” And Thumbelina did all that the field mouse asked her, and found herself very comfortable.

Brian Alderson, the British children's author and critic, whose many folkloric projects have included the editing of Andrew Lang's color fairy books, as well as a collection of Hans Christian Andersen's tales ( The Swan's Stories), here turns his attention to the classic story of a tiny girl, no bigger than a thumb. The trials and tribulations of Thumbelina (Tommelise in the original Danish) - kidnapped by toads, set adrift on a river, seized by maybugs, almost forced to marry a pompous old mole - are all here, as is the appropriately happy ending. Some little fishes saw her distress, and nibbled the stalk so that the waterlily pad could drift away. A passing butterfly too seemed very taken with the pretty little girl, and Thumbelina tied the butterfly to her sash, so that she could speed along the river faster. They floated along the river this way, until a stag beetle, also smitten by the pretty little girl, snatched Thumbelina away. He ignored the butterfly, who was still anchored to the leaf. Yes, you speak like a sensible man,’ said the field-mouse. ‘What has a bird, in spite of all his singing, in the winter-time? He must starve and freeze, and that must be very pleasant for him, I must say!’ Ladybird Books Well Loved Tales - Princess Books - Snow White - Thumbelina - Little Mermaid - Bedtime Storybook Gift - Series 606D A walnut shell, elegantly polished, served her for a cradle; her bed was formed of blue violet leaves, with a rose leaf for a counterpane. Here she slept at night, but during the day she amused herself on a table, where the peasant wife had placed a plate full of water. He was rich and learned, no doubt, but he always spoke slightingly of the sun and the pretty flowers, because he had never seen them. Thumbelina was obliged to sing to him, “Ladybird, ladybird, fly away home,” and many other pretty songs. And the mole fell in love with her because she had so sweet a voice; but he said nothing yet, for he was very prudent and cautious. The moral of this story is clear that we will encounter many problems and obstacles in our life. Many of doing something that we don't want, but as long as we are true to ourselves, honest and kind, just like Thumbelina, we will overcome these obstacles and in the end get what is best for us. Thumbelina didn't want to hurt anyone or anybody, not for a moment. She was fair and helped the needy. Female toad stole Thumbelina thinking that she would be a perfect wife for her ugly son. She doesn't even think about the fact that her son as a husband can make any girl unhappy. And the worst part is that the toad is busy building a family nest in a swampy where Thumbelina can't survive. But the old toad can't understand all this.
