Hi Marco, I see Stan Campbell from time to time busking in Birmingham uk, in and around the city, playing the bongo's! sad to see the guy, suffering from mental health problems, he had a really cool voice." In 2017, the band invited 20-year-old Birmingham native Saffiyah Khan to a show after a photo of her confronting an " English Defence League goon" in a Specials t-shirt at a counter-demonstration went viral. Less than two years later, Khan had performed on stage for the first time, recorded a song and toured North America with the band. [41] [42] Hall was quoted as saying, "The door remains open to him". [23] However, Dammers described the new reunion as a "takeover" and claimed he had been forced out of the band. [24] Around that same time, longtime Specials fan Amy Winehouse joined Dammers onstage at Hyde Park, singing the song he wrote for the Specials, "Free Nelson Mandela", for Mandela's 90th birthday concert, dubbed 46664 after Mandela's prison number, and also the name of his AIDS charity, which received money raised by the birthday bash. Michelle Jones, John Dunlop, Andrew Boulton Selecting the right structure for potential real estate investments, from funding, acquisition,… IR35 and the construction industry Steeling yourself to sit through The Boiler 33 years later – it appears on the second CD of this expanded reissue of the Special AKA’s sole album – you boggle at the fact it actually made the top 40. It’s tempting to say that you couldn’t imagine any band in the Special AKA’s position doing something like that now, but in fairness, you couldn’t really imagine a band in the Special AKA’s position doing something like that then. The Boiler served notice that they were going to be a far less immediate prospect than the band that had come before them, with their unbroken string of top 10 hits and the youth cult that had formed in their wake.

It was 1991, and there was widespread public outrage over the beating of Rodney King. “I felt like it was volunteering to be the boogeyman because everybody seemed to hate police at that time,” Stan says; however, he felt any real reform had to come from within a law enforcement agency, and he saw himself as “stepping behind enemy lines” to make a difference. Costello: The run of singles [as new incarnation Special AKA] leading up to the In The Studio album – War Crimes, The Boiler and Racist Friend – were extraordinary and uncompromising. Campbell was born in 1930 in Hastings, Nebraska. He attended Rochelle Township High School in Rochelle, Illinois, located approximately 80 miles west of Chicago. [1] College football [ edit ] I knew Stan in the mid 90's when I worked at his music publishers. I took him out for lunch a couple of times and he came to see me at the office few times. I'd worked at WEA records when his solo lp was released and I'd loved it, so was I chuffed to have the opportunity to get to know him a bit. I liked him, but it was obvious that he had issues, certainly the girls in the office found him a bit creepy. But we hit it off, although I did think he was bonkers. He played me demos of new materiel that he was working on and I absolutely loved them. They were very sparse and atmospheric, with lots of haunting oboe parts. Unfortunately he had a reputation for being for being very difficult to deal with which didn't help his career. I left the music business in '94, but always remembered Stan fondly and as a wasted talent, who was making some beautiful music. I'm so saddened to read of his actions and assaults. He was clearly dealing with demons/mental illness. So so sad. I have a cassette copy of the songs somewhere as when I left I kept a box of demos I'd liked. I hope that he is in a better space now. In 2016, Stan founded D.O.P.E. which stands for De-escalating Officer Patrol Encounters. The goal of the organization is to present solutions to both police and citizens so that everyone goes home alive after a law enforcement encounter. While the effort includes outreach to law enforcement agencies, much of D.O.P.E.’s mission involves educating citizens regarding their legal rights and obligations during a police encounter, teaching them how to make the officer feel safe to decrease anxiety, and giving them tips on how to seek redress if an officer violates their rights.

After their departure from the Specials, Golding, Hall and Staple founded the pop band Fun Boy Three and enjoyed commercial success from 1981 to 1983 with hits such as " Tunnel of Love", " It Ain't What You Do (It's the Way That You Do It)", " Our Lips Are Sealed" and "The Lunatics (Have Taken Over the Asylum)". I used to love Years Go By and his take on Inner City Blues, and have often wondered what happened to Stan Campbell and why he disappeared without trace. What a sad tale it is, and how sad also that his music will be forgotten by all but a few. And those of us who do remember him can't even afford to buy the CD!
