M.2 screws, a relatively new addition to the menagerie of things that you have to screw into your motherboard. So you don’t need to screw them in, but it’s such a simple and easy safety measure, there’s no point not doing it. Usually, the motherboard also includes a stand-off. So if you’re missing SSD mounting screws and are looking for a replacement, remember that any random screw might not be able to fit in the stand-off. – Do All Manufacturers Include the Screw?

BillyBuerger said:My biggest issue was that most motherboards don't have a screw there by default. Seems to be that the SSDs themselves generally have come with the screws. Why don't they just include at least one screw in the longest position so it's there ready to go and can be moved to whatever location is needed?

After that, you can simply unscrew it, install your M.2 drive ( as long as it’s the proper size), and then screw it in. An M2 SSD screw missing can be a bit of a hassle, but you can easily find a replacement. You just need to keep the following things in mind: On a side note. Not sure why both of them have MSI listed. But I do know that I bought one kit, and couldn't get it to work in my motherboard (Gigabyte). Bought the other kit and it was fine.

That is not an M.2 screw; that’s an M.2 standoff. It’s the thing that you screw the M.2 screw into. Looks like this...Instead, the screws for mounting the SSD come with the motherboard or the mounting kit you’re planning to install it in. – Why Don’t Some SSDs Come With the Screw? Not sure why that screw doesn't fit since it came with board, but I did find out that there are two different types of standoffs and screw kits, at least in my case. So if you want to buy some screws for M.2 standoffs, what you need are M2 screws. Specifically, you want to get the following M.2 screw size: “ M2x3mm“. MacGyver it (Not Recommended) Hi, So I recently bought my first SSD. The 970 EVO. However, I have no screw to place it. It's not on the motherboard, it did not came with the SSD and the box of the Mobo is lost... I can't seem to find them anywhere online, except if I pay 15 euro and wait 3 weeks until it comes in. Does anybody know which screws I need exactly? So I could try hitting up some hardware stores to see if they have some?

Looks like this... As the name implies, they’re screws designated to screw in M.2 drives into your motherboard. And they can be a right nuisance at times because they have a tendency to magically disappear when you actually need them. Get some actual M.2 screws and do it right. But in the meantime… Look for Old Small Screws in Your HomeI had the same lame issue! My motherboard came with the spacer but not the screw, and screw flight was so small I couldn't find any screw that fitted. Just went through this and tried Blue tac – I know, I know … of course as the machine environment warms up the blue tac softens. My OS’s became unstable and then this morning the BIOS could not find the drive at all. It had sprung up and was at an angle – 31 Degrees perhaps? As this was an additional drive I used the screw from the smaller capacity drive and removed it. Miraculously no harm seems to have been done. But who knows at this stage? so my advice is to wait – you know it makes sense – until you have a proper screw.
