It extracts details in treble and engages with its crisp yet non-sibilant appeal. Taps on cymbals produce a welcoming sense of space and air but subtleties are not expressed enough compressing some elements to blur into their nearest neighbor. With an option for Bluetooth connection, the A30 makes for a comprehensive solution as an integrated amplifier. While using mid-fi equipment I wouldn’t be surprised if the difference would shrink to unrecognizable. With my portable over-ear headphones, it was mostly a game of guessing which one is which and with better headphones and speakers, the difference started to be obvious from the get-go. Preliminary impressions are good but there is a lot more to talk about, so let’s break it down step by step. I'd heard about build / reliability issues with the CA kit - I don't know how true this is but it did put me off a little, plus Richer Sounds were only pushing that amp and nothing else, hence I thought I'd ask for a balance.

There are 2 main ways to interact with the A30, the first is directly going through the menu using the volume knob on the device. Although this is quite efficient, it would be more difficult to do from a distance if the A30 is used as an integrated amplifier.However, the A30 also strays away from the typical class D sound by adding some coloration and warmth to the presentation, making it an overall more exciting but smoother listening experience. Timbre I have listened to various kinds of music for testing purposes and a lot of classical music for my pleasure and I remained wholly satisfied with the overall performance. Color – will let you choose the color of the lettering, there are 8 color options. I like white and cyan the most. The colored LCD screen will display all the necessary information and navigation through the menus is easy to do. While it maintains control over most headphones and speakers even when it’s run using Bluetooth, there is a surprising amount of bass bloom when it’s connected to Bluetooth. Although this doesn’t make the bass bleed into the midrange, it makes it a bit overpowering for already warmer speakers or headphones.

There is a marked difference between Tidal FLAC and MQA when being decoded with the D30. While the tonal balance remains generally the same, there is a marked improvement in terms of overall texture most notably in how drum hits are executed. Unfolded MQA readily conveys an image of the cavity of the drum being hit. All in all, D30 had a good extension in the lower and upper registers, but still there was some raw energy missing at both ends of the spectrum, making it rounder and smoother sounding most of the time. The greatest strength of the D30 though is its DAC section. Paired with the Loxjie A30 allows both to play to each other’s strengths with the more relaxed presentation of the D30 complimenting the A30’s more vibrant performance.

While the soundstage isn’t particularly closed in, the images within the soundstage err closer to the intimate side rather than grandiose. When images are created within the soundstage, the images are placed accurately, but the delineation of the images is not as chiseled. While still on the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to output power, for Loxjie, the 700mW@32Ω rating of the D40 is its highest yet in its full lineup. Upping their amp game, the expectation for me is to hear more of the DAC when used as a combo. Unlike most DACs we have reviewed thus far, the MQA decoding capabilities on the D30 are not just limited to USB. It can also extend to both the coaxial and optical connections which means that the D30 can even decode MQA-CD formats.

The increased DX3 Pro+ amplifier performance is very helpful in sending both low impedance IEMs and less efficient full-size headphones to full throttle with a good amount of headroom to spare. With the +6dB low gain setting, the ADX5000 is already at normal listening volume at -31dB.
