From the turbulent streets of St. Petersburg and aristocratic countryside estates to the avenues of Paris where a society of fallen Russian emigres live to the mansions of Long Island, the lives of Eliza, Sofya, and Varinka will intersect in profound ways. The third character who will share POV chapters with Eliza and Sofya is Varinka. When we meet Varinka, the taxman is coming to her izba (Russian home) to collect. They have no money, so he takes the samovar, an urn used to boil water for tea. Varinka’s mother, Mamka, sleeps on a bench and Varinka sleeps in the cozy spot atop the oven. Before Varinka’s papa’s death, he bought a young man, Taras, from his alcoholic parents, to apprentice. Taras has since spent time in prison and has become a different person, a brute, unfeeling, and prone to unsavory activities. Varinka’s and Mamka’s life has become much more unpleasant since Taras has come home from prison. It is 1914, and the world has been on the brink of war so often, many New Yorkers treat the subject with only passing interest.

Though the writing is rich and vivid with detail about the period, the storytelling is quite a bit slower than in Kelly’s captivating debut, and both the plot and relationship development feel secondary to the historical scene-setting. A nuanced tale that speaks to the strength of women. Rose scolds Miles for taking peanuts for himself. (" There's No Place Like Home, Part 2") ( promotional still)

If only this book had grabbed me from the very beginning, I’d be raving about it. Still, for those who love historical fiction, it is a worthwhile read. My thanks to NetGalley, Ballantine Books, and the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest, unbiased review. Lindelof, Damon& Cuse, Carlton, (March 30, 2007) "Official Lost Audio Podcast", ABC. Retrieved on December 30, 2008.
