The frequency response chart for the Skullcandy Hesh ANC shows a major boost in the sub-bass, and a big boost in the treble frequencies compared to our consumer target curve. This means low bass frequencies will be louder compared to the music producer’s intent, and this could result in bass loud enough to negatively impact the mid range frequencies. If you want to hear your music without excessive amounts of sub-bass enhancement, you likely won’t enjoy this frequency response. Lows, mids, highs Treble is surprisingly crisp, far more than is on display in other Skullcandy headphones I’ve used. This treble is responsible for quite a lot of the Hesh 3’s energy; the sound isled by the treble and bass, not just the low-end. Skullcandy has the basics nailed down. Bluetooth stability is very good and at 22 hours battery life is solid. The headphones offer rapid charging, too. Five minutes of charging from flat gets you 90 minutes’ use. The Skullcandy Hesh 3 suffer different problems to some of their rivals. They sound better than the JBL E55BT, Sony XB-650BT and Motorola Escape Pulse+, offering cleaner bass or better mid-range clarity. Or both.
The mic offers solid intelligibility. Using the Voice Memos app on an iPhone 6s, we could understand every word we recorded, although the audio was laced with typical artifacts, making it fuzzy in spots. This is pretty much par for the course with Bluetooth headphone mics, and the Hesh 3 has better intelligibility than plenty of models we test. Performance
Skullcandy is light on accessories here. There's a micro USB charging cable and a 3.5mm audio cable, both of which connect to the right earcup. Though there's no included tote or case, the earcups do swivel and fold down into a compact size for easy stowing. The bluetooth on it is excellent, i had a lot of cut outs and dips in sound, but this was due to my phone, not having enough ram to play music and do other things. Once i got a new phone this changed and now the music plays without interruption. There are faux-leather ear and headband pads that are comfortable if you don’t wear glasses. The earpads are supple but its tight clamping force means those with big heads and glasses will feel uncomfortable during extended sessions.
In terms of a feature set, the Skullcandy Hesh 3 are a basic pair of headphones: You won’t find active noise cancellation, auto play/pause, or multipoint Bluetooth here. It’s annoying that the Hesh 3 can’t connect simultaneously to two devices at once but it’s par for the course in this price range. If you rather not take a risk on the build quality, I would recommend going for the Skullcandy Hesh 2 Wireless instead. Other than the battery life (15hr vs 22hr) and aesthetics, the Skullcandy Hesh 2 is pretty much similar to the Hesh 3 except with a more stable frame. Skullcandy Hesh 2 Wireless The mechanism swivels around the X-axis only, which has its limitations. However, putting it on is no effort at all. The headphones collapse compactly for convenient storage when not in use. Even though more oomph could have been added to the bass, I’d say the Skullcandy is enjoyable. It provides a very fun sound that caters to non-audiophiles, also known as consumers on-the-go. Please note that these are not meant for bass addicts. MidsI started looking at Bose and Beats, but to me they both seemed to be overpriced and more hype than anything else. I had always heard of Skullcandy, but never actually tried them. That’s when I came across these Hesh3’s.
The over-ear headphones are mainly plastic with a metal headband. Build quality is subpar (more about that later). The ear cups, however, boast a modern matte finish that both looks and feels good, and not being a fingerprint magnet is a big plus. The young, cool vibe the device exudes is designed to go with the casual look. If you’ve got small ears then this is unlikely to be a problem. This is one instance when it might be wise to try before you buy.On the other hand, the tightness gives a great seal, so the isolation is top notch. Ear pads are soft and good quality, although heat does build inside up when worn for long periods. It could have been longer and more flexible. The current design grips far too tightly and may cause discomfort to the ears, especially during longer listening sessions.
