About this deal

Speaking of getting up on a ladder, many outdoor cameras nowadays are wireless. This seems convenient at first glance, and makes initial installation a breeze. However, a wireless camera will need to be taken down and charged periodically. This camera, on the other hand is powered by Power over Ethernet (PoE). With PoE power, voltage is transferred directly via an Ethernet cable to your camera. The good news is that you won’t have to charge any batteries. That said, you’ll need to run a physical wire from your camera to your router. And if your router isn’t PoE-capable, you’ll need to buy a PoE injector. In all, the PoE connection has a range of 330 feet, long enough for most applications. If you opt for 24/7 recording, connect the camera to Reolink NVR. The 823A can work with or without an NVR. You may also store the footage on an FTP server, but this option requires some technical know-how. Reolink RLC-823A Specifications Model To begin with, you can view a live feed of your camera from anywhere in the world. But that’s just the most basic feature you can access. To begin with, you can pan and tilt your camera to get the exact coverage you desire. You can also opt to utilize vehicle and person detection. This function will always be used to trigger an actual recording. However, it can also be set to send you push alerts whenever the camera is triggered. The notification will even tell you what it has detected: a vehicle or a person. The camera motor is quieter than the original 823a. I will do a little bit more testing in person, but through the camera it is much more tolerable and doesn’t overwhelm other sounds. While zoomed in it very quiet, with varying degrees. Speed also plays a big factor, 1 speed vs 25 speed is a big difference in sound.

Do not point the camera towards a glass window. Or, it may result in poor image performance due to the window glare from infrared LEDs, ambient lights or status lights. If I rotate the camera to focus down my garden path, it is perhaps a bit too dark to have the IR off. But again, with it on, there is some reflection. IR On IR Off In my academic pursuits, I earned a BSc in Information Systems Design from UCLAN, before advancing my learning with a Master’s Degree in Computing. This advanced study also included Cisco CCNA accreditation, further demonstrating my commitment to understanding and staying ahead of the technology curve. To set up the camera, you need to connect the camera to a PoE switch/injector for network connection. After that, you may finish the initial setup via both Reolink App and Client.

Users can view live footage, control the pan and tilt features, and set up person and vehicle detection.

The RLC-823A 16X delivers high-quality daytime footage with 4K resolution and up to 16X optical zoom. I chose not to install a microSD card at first, as I planned to use the Reolink NVR. However, within the NVR, not all the functionality is available like the other cameras. For example, the NVR doesn’t seem to tag the motion detection as human or vehicles. Patrol is spotty occasionally. If you plan to watch this away from home on a tablet or your phone, be prepared to see freezing frames and lag occasionally. Movement takes a lot bandwidth when not connected to the same internet. The RLC-823A 16X features advanced motion detection, allowing for accurate detection without a subscription. The camera can be set up to trigger recording based on person and vehicle detection. Micro SD cover screws will fall out. Best installed before placement. And are NOT easily replaceable. The mount holes are just a little too snug to push screws straight through, you can kind of do it at an angle however. Since you can’t push them on straight, I would recommend doing one screw first and then once that one is secure and screwed in, screw in the others. One thing we appreciate about the RLC-823A is the viewing angle. At a maximum of 96 degrees, it’s ideal for sitting inside corners, where it will cover the entire area. On a flat wall, it can cover the relevant area near a door or another access point. Keep in mind, though, that the viewing angle gets narrower as you zoom in. At the maximum zoom level, the angle will only be 27 degrees. This isn’t a criticism. It’s part of the very nature of a zoom function. When you zoom in, you’re viewing less area. But keep in mind that if you want to cover an entire corner, you’ll need to be at 1x zoom. For comparison here are some pictures from my older models. Still quite good but I can see a difference in quality. Optical Zoom testing Before zoom Zoom Optimizing NVR resources Additionally, I capped the live feed and recording to 10 fps. This was able to reduce my CPU usage to about half of what it was compared to using the main stream for everything. The substream is a fraction of the main stream’s bandwidth. Overall, I would highly recommend the 823a or 823a 16x depending on your living situation. If you are in the suburbs or urban areas, I would recommend the 823a as you probably need the bigger FOV and spotlight. If you live in a rural area, I would recommend the 823a 16x as it would probably have far more uses on more open land. The FOV alone is kind of big deal with how much it is reduced in the new camera. Thankfully with the floodlight Reolink is releasing, I can at least make up for the colored night mode issue, but I’m hoping that there may be a firmware update to fix the FOV, but if this is standard, at least everyone will know what to expect.

It is the zoom that’s the most impressive feature of this camera. My property is not best suited to this specific camera, but I placed it outside my first-floor office window facing towards the road. No subscription fee: The 823A camera can be a great choice for DIY surveillance. You’ll only pay for the actual device, with no strings attached. The unboxing of the RLC-823A 16X reveals the camera, warranty and, waterproof lid installation guides, and several accessories and parts for installation. The RLC-823A 16X is more suitable for rural areas with more open land, while the RLC-823A is recommended for suburban or urban areas where a larger field of view and spotlight are more important. One option is to use the cameras solely for remote monitoring through the Reolink app. This would definitely reduce the usefulness of the cameras. Therefore, the low light footage is a bit hit or miss and will depend on your placement and specific needs. Mount on the 16x is easier to install than the original, but may be a little bit more work to put together.
