She is loved. She is one of the Sinclairs, a good-looking "old-money Democrat" family, think the Kennedys, without the political aspirations. They have names like Liberty, Taft, and Tipper. They go to Ivy League schools. They have trust funds. They have sired a generation of children, the leader of which is Cadence. Cadence and her crew call themselves "The Liars." The Liars are composed of her cousins Mirren, Johnny, and the outcast "Healthcliff," Indian love interest, Gat. Although welcomed to the island every summer, Gat never feels truly at ease because he is of Indian decent and can tell that the Sinclair grandparents do not approve of him. The four grow up together each summer and call themselves “the Liars.”

And maybe that makes me sound extremely heartless, but I couldn't relate to the main character (no, I'm not even going to tell you her name because I want you to go in blind). But somewhere along the lines, I started to become intrigued with the story because it became this strange, wild thing that I couldn't piece together.

In the summer of 1985, Caroline has so much on her plate: dealing with the grief of drowning 10 years old sister Rosemary whose ghost starts visiting her as her beautiful and self absorbed sisters Bee and Penelope already moved on with her lives, flirting with boys, enjoying summer, pretending nothing tragic happened just like her parents do. So all I’m going to do is to give you a little character description. The rest you’ll have to figure out on your own. XD I loved that feeling of constant perfection. How despite being messed up, the Sinclairs managed to be “sparkling, sunburnt and blessed” - despite being awful, they were perfect. There was just that consistent ethereal quality.

Harris Sinclair – The wealthy patriarch of the family who is controlling and enjoys watching his children fight to please him Cadence is the granddaughter of Tipper and Harris Sinclair, wealthy elite of New England. Every summer Cadence spends her vacation on an island off Massachusetts, which is owned by her grandparents. She revels in the freedom of the island and loves to spend time with her cousins — Johnny and Mirren — and their family friend, Gat. Johnny’s mother’s boyfriend is Gat’s uncle. Cadence instantly formed an attachment to him when they met roughly nine years earlier.

Cadence makes a tight little group with the two grandchildren her own age, Johnny and Mirren, and an outsider, Gat, who joins them every year. Aged 15, Cadence falls in love with Gat. At the end of that summer, she has an accident, a breakdown or some kind of illness, but she can't remember what happened, how or why. All she knows is that she was found on the shore, dressed in her underwear, the sea washing over her. "They tested me for brain tumours, meningitis, you name it. To relieve the pain they prescribed this drug and that drug and another drug, because the first one didn't work and the second one didn't work, either." more than anything, i think this is a story about the complexities of sisterhood. i don’t have sisters so i can’t fully understand the bond between sisters but the relationship between the Sinclair sisters stole the show for me and physically pained me to read. the amount of times my heart was beating out of my chest or i began to cry was countless. and that’s why this is getting five stars, just purely due to the visceral reaction it evoked within me... just like when i was 14 years old.

Cadence Easton: Protagonist and narrator of the novel, Penny's only child and the oldest grandchild. i read We Were Liars when i was about fourteen. my best friend at the time and i had a lil book club just between the two of us where we exchanged our favourite books and knew that the other would love it, too. she gave me We Were Liars. i gave her The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Life feels beautiful that day. The four of us Liars, we have always been. We always will be. No matter what happens as we go to college, grow old, build lives for ourselves; no matter if Gat and I are together or not. No matter where we go, we will always be able to line up on the roof of Cuddledown and gaze at the sea. This island is ours. Here, in some way, we are young forever.”

We Were Liars” follows Cadence Sinclair Eastman. Her mother’s side of the family, the Sinclairs, are “old-money Democrats” as she puts it. They spend their summers on a private island called Beechwood Island.

Special thanks to NetGalley and Random House Children’s / Delacorte Press for sharing this one of the most anticipated books’ digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts. The title. It does't make sense to me. I don't want to say anything in case spoilers, but I don't think it's the perfect title.Caroline Lennox Taft Sinclair (Carrie) lives a privileged lifestyle. Her wealthy family owns an island off the coast of Massachusetts where they summer every year. In this book, she is telling her son, Johnny, the story of the summer of 1987. She thinks it is particularly important for him to hear this story, but is unsure whether she will be able to tell the whole truth. This story is told through many concise sentences, which are often out of sequence, but this review will attempt to tell the story in a linear fashion. Cadence Sinclair Eastman is almost 18. She lives with her mother in Vermont. Her father left the family when Cadence was 15. His leaving shattered her world.
