The original machine also worked on the new MCD, but did over hang the cradle. A specific version of the Mega Adapter/Master System Converter was also designed. The Mega Drive is a fourth-generation video game console released by Sega in Japan in 1988 and Europe, Australia and other PAL regions in 1990. The console was released in North America in 1989 under the name Sega Genesis, since Sega was unable to secure legal rights to the Mega Drive name in that region. The Mega Drive was Sega's third home console and the successor to the Sega Master System, with which it is electronically compatible.

The Mega Drive / Genesis sold over 30 million units worldwide. This was less than the 49 million sold by the SNES worldwide, according to Nintendo. The higher overall worldwide sales of the SNES is also due to the wide lead it had over the Mega Drive in Japan and the US markets. This decision by SEGA infuriated consumers around the world who had bought the Sega Mega CD and 32X attachments only to see Sega abandon all support. This can, at least in slight, be seen as a contributing factor to the downfall of Sega as a console manufacturer. The console wasn't discontinued in Europe, Austrailia and New Zealand until 1998, where it was outsold by the Super NES as well as the Saturn. The Mega Drive / Genesis was pulled out of the Japanese and North American markets before the SNES; however, this is not including the licensed Majesco and ATGames versions of the Mega Drive. Last year, however, we saw arguably the first big product to fill in one major under-served niche: the early '90s CD add-on adapter. Specifically, the Sega CD has received new life in the form of the MegaSD. This combination flash drive and FPGA board plugs into original Genesis and Mega Drive consoles (and the newer Analogue Mega Sg). It replicates the original Sega CD's functions without requiring a laser-driven disc drive while also remaining compatible with that add-on's peculiar system-communication style. a b c Kent, Steven L. Sega Genesis started life in 1988 in Japan as Mega Drive. It became available in the United States in 1989 as Sega Genesis. Despite the name, this console was the third version developed by Sega. Anyway, in the United States and some other countries the console is known as Sega Genesis. In Europe it was sold as Mega Drive. The consoles are identical and they don’t have major differences.

Also vital to the success of the Genesis was Sega of America’s determination to bring US developers on to the console. There was an understanding that they wouldn’t beat the Super Nintendo with arcade conversions alone – they needed local talent. So they approached US studios such as Accolade, Spectrum Holobyte and, of course, Electronic Arts to support the console. Sheff, David (1993). The standard controller features a rounded shape, a directional pad, three main buttons, and a START button. In 1993, Sega released a slightly smaller pad with three additional face buttons, similar to the design of buttons on some popular arcade fighting games such as Street Fighter II. Sega also released a wireless revision of the six-button controller, the Remote Arcade Pad. [126] a b c d e "Sega Genesis — Games". Allgame. Archived from the original on February 10, 2010 .
