Do you have a Power of Attorney? MoneySavingExpert.com founder Martin Lewis explains how this crucial protection works, why it's more important than a will, and how to get one in the latest episode of ITV's The Martin Lewis Money Show Live. We also tested an older less efficient version of the NewAir NAC14KWH02. The newest version of this model now has a SACC of 10,000 BTUs. Portable air conditioners are absolutely essential for hot summer days. The weather in the UK can be extremely unpredictable, and with the warm months upon us, portable air conditioners are a boon. Living spaces, hallways, bedrooms, and children’s rooms can be kept cool at all times. The decision regarding type and style of the portable air conditioner ultimately comes down to the volume of the room, the people using it, and the features that the machine can offer.

The main benefit of a portable heat pump is that it’s a low-carbon form of heating, since it doesn't rely on fossil fuels, unlike gas or oil boilers. Portable heat pumps do use electricity – which isn’t always from renewable sources – so they aren’t carbon-free, but they’re better than the alternatives. We find a lot of customers get these units for bedrooms,” says Appliance Direct’s Jake Crossley. “7,000 BTUs is the output we would recommend for rooms up to 18 square metres. Any larger and you won’t get the full benefit.” verifyErrors }}{{ message }}{{ /verifyErrors }}{{ The new standard for cooling capacity is called Seasonally Adjusted Cooling Capacity – SACC. This new standard is described by the equation Air conditioners differ by performance. What this means is that each air conditioner is different from the other in terms of its output performance level. This difference is as follows: In a single hose system, the removed air (that was used to cool the condenser) creates an area of low pressure inside of the room. Comparatively, outdoor air is at a higher pressure. A pressure gradient is created between warmer outdoor air and cooled indoor air. It is because of this higher SACC value that we can confidently say that they will cool a room faster and to a lower temperature than the dual hose Whynter ARC-14S. the outdoor chamber to be set to an ambient air temp. of 95° F for dual hose units. No outdoor air temperature was specified for single hose units

Noise levels. All air conditioners in operation make a fan-like noise, but they vary by as much as ten decibels, which could make all the difference when you’re trying to sleep. Using a portable air conditioner is probably the most natural solution to all these issues with heat. With a portable air conditioner, you can wheel the machine for a comfortable temperature wherever you go. Portable air conditioners are great investments instead of installing permanent ones in every room. Not only do you save a lot of electricity bills, but also conserve energy while you’re doing it. Plug and play portable air conditioners can simply be connected to the nearest power outlet for instant cooling. The temperature sensor allows the unit to calculate how much hot air needs to be extracted and gauge the amount of fresh air required to reduce the overall ambient of the room. You can also set this manually by selecting your preferred temperature.

Are portable air conditioners quiet?

Kandola says the most popular options for portable air conditioners are 9,000 and 12,000 BTU, which would cool a room of around 21 and 30 square metres respectively. Remember that the exhaust pipe will need to be run outside through a window and the gap sealed if possible. Window kits are sold for this purpose - see below. Do portable air conditioners use a lot of electricity? In a dual hose unit, warm outdoor air is pulled over the condenser much like it is in a central air conditioning system. However, here the outdoor air is pulled into the AC unit via a (second) duct. The outdoor air is warm but, again, it's cooler than the condenser so it can still cool it. Cooling the condenser adds heat to the air and this heated up air is exhausted via an exhaust duct much the same as it is in a single hose unit.

Heat added by ducting is also a major inefficiency. Old guidelines didn’t account for this inefficiency. New testing This means that you can compare the SACC of a single hose unit to that of a dual hose unit and the SACC alone will tell you which unit has a greater cooling capacity – which unit will be able to cool a room faster and to a lower temperature. In a portable air conditioner the condenser is part of the whole portable system – it’s indoors along with that system. Who or what determines whether a particular portable air conditioner has 10,000, 12,000, or 14,000 BTUs/hr of cooling capacity? In a central air conditioning system the hot side of the system is outdoors – the condenser is outside the house.

The best portable air conditioner units for 2023 are:

NatWest, RBS and Ulster Bank to close at least 172 branches in 2023/24 – here's the full list, plus alternatives Most importantly, note how the equations above fully take into account the major inefficiencies of single hose units:

Energy Efficiency Rating/ Reading: The portable units are measured between A to G, with A being the most energy-efficient. Some units are also measured from A+++ to D where A+++ is the most energy-efficient. You get two window kits with the supplied 1.8m duct as standard – a fabric one designed to be attached via supplied Velcro strips, plus one that comprises a trio of hard plastic window ‘plates’. When joined together, the latter also allows you to vent the duct through a sliding door – though you’ll be left with a small gap at the top. This is still far better than the window kits offered with most air conditioners, a big point in the Meaco’s favour. Also note how SACC involves outdoor air temperatures of 83° F and 95° F. Granted, the higher temperature of 95° F only carries a 20% weight in the rating but it’s still present and it will still very much adversely affect the rating of any unit that does poorly at this temperature. The COP: The Coefficient Of Performance measures the efficiency of the air conditioner. Higher the COP, better is the air conditioner.

Dehumidifier Mode: Instead of buying a separate dehumidifier, you can opt for a portable variant that offers this mode without paying for a completely new machine. Dehumidifiers are excellent to keep the damp and mould away from the room. The above features are uniform in all portable air conditioners. There are many additional features that people are also interested in. The self-evaporating portable air conditioners are actually coolers. They function by the principle of condensation. While they are not air conditioners, they do fall under the same category. These self-evaporating portable air conditioners are incredibly lightweight, come with a set of wheels, are extremely affordable, and fit in nearly all tight spaces. For people with space and budget constraints, this variant is a boon.
