Let me tell you one thing though, whether you are a speculative fiction reader or not, you've *never* read anything like this book. And I do mean NEVER. More than just treating the book as a simple medium to deliver a message, Damasio has conceived this specific work as a book universe. The medium is intimately linked to the message and well, I'm sad to say it, but this remarkable achievement simply makes the book intranslatable. You'd have to rewrite entire parts of the book to make them work in another language. It'd be a tremendous work and you'd never be sure whether or not you'd be betraying the author's original speech.

En gros, le roman de Damasio, soit on rentre dedans (un peu aux forceps, admettons-le), soit on lâche assez vite, pour les raisons citées plus haut. Andrebbe gridato (no pun intended) ai quattro venti: L'Orda del Vento è un capolavoro. Un romanzo perfetto, senza sbavature, con il giusto equilibrio dato da una notevole inclinazione alla riflessione filosofica e una tensione narrativa che raggiunge livelli a volte quasi insopportabili. L'osmose réussie de la science-fiction, de la philosophie et de la poésie est ce qui caractérise le plus ce livre.

Consiglio questo libro a tutti gli amanti del fantasy, della fantascienza e non. Sebbene le nozioni scientifiche legate al vento e al vivo siano un po' ostiche al primo acchito, penso che la bellezza del libro si fondi proprio sui personaggi, sui loro rapporti, e sulle loro emozioni, e che comunque, tutta questa parte "teorica", non renda affatto noiosa la lettura, come ho letto in alcune recensioni. Questo libro è davvero un capolavoro, un'opera unica, come me ne sono capitate rarissime in tutti questi lunghi anni di lettura. Alain Damasio is particularly interested in the music of words and in the potential of sound as language. He worked repeatedly on sound versions of his texts but also created a soundwalk: La Sansouïre. I loved everything about this novel : the language, the worldbuilding, the characters, the plot, the ideas discussed in between the lines, ... I nearly cried at the end, I was so exhausted by the journey (both the one in the book, and the one that reading itself was). Reading this book was definitely a physical experience, like reading so few books is (Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, The Vicomte of Bragelonne when I was 14) : your know, when the story you read is so right that every step a character takes, you take it with him? That book is like this. In a devastated world, living to the rhythms of the unbearable winds which rule it, an organization selects, raises and trains children from a very young age so that they will become the next horde. The 34th horde counts 23 members; each has a specific function (tracer, scribe, troubadour, hunter, protector, carer, maker of fire, wood maker, etc.). They have been traveling the world for over 30 years in search of the origin of the wind.

Une épopée pleine de rebondissements, d'évènements inattendus, étonnants et inexplorés, pour me divertir, me passionner ; une flanquée de personnages superbement croqués au point de se sentir familière avec chacun d'entre eux, un collectif soudé qui me permettraient de me sentir moins seule ; une écriture poétique qui viendrait nourrir mon âme ; des messages philosophiques qui enrichirait mon esprit et me rendrait plus forte. Un univers onirique, des paysages d'une telle diversité, d'une réelle beauté, qui m'enchanteraient, paysages souvent rudes et sauvages, depuis les déserts de sable jaunes, les vallées encaissées, en passant par d'interminables marécages gris, des landes vertes aux nuages violets sur lesquels le soleil perçant ouvre des flaques jaunes, jusqu'aux abrupts glaciers volcaniques…sur mon île au paysage figé, je pourrais ainsi voyager ! Les autres sont souvent interchangeables, et donc donne l’impression d’une horde peuplé de figurants. This is a a very original book. That it could be so ambitious and not fail to deliver is very impressive. But based on how much I actually enjoyed reading it and how much I'd like to read more books by this author, or books of this type (if there are any), it is just a bit over 3 stars for me. I'm rounding-up to 4 based on the fact that I greatly enjoyed the wordplay that I understood, especially from the troubadour character Caracole, and the assumption that I would have enjoyed that aspect even more if I spoke French better.
