Many of the companies that produce graded readers aim to publish a range of different stories that appeal to learners regardless of age and interests. As soon as you start reading native Japanese texts, you’ll discover a whole new ability you never knew you had. If you’d like to save money, NHK Easy News is a solid resource. Just as the title suggests, it’s real news written in simple Japanese. Short stories should be read intensively. Untangle complicated sentences and look up any words you don’t know. After each story (unless it’s way below your level) you should have a concrete list of things you can express after reading but couldn’t before. I’d like to be the first to congratulate you: You’ve now read your first full-length story and that’s a huge achievement. Frankly, if you’ve read one book, you can read a second. The LingQ method is built around the belief that we acquire languages through extensive reading and listening, not conscious study. This is exactly how Steve learns languages (he's up to 20 as of writing!), though LingQ certainly makes the process much easier than the manual, analog methods at his disposal in the pre-internet era in which he learned his first handful of foreign tongues.
