I received an advance copy of this novel from the publisher, Harper Voyager, via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This summer was different, like a new interlude had slipped between solstice and autumn. But perhaps it felt this way only be- cause things had shifted ever so slightly to the sinister side and Sidra was still trying to adjust to how her days should be now.

I lost almost all of my interest in this series while about 25% through A Fire Endless, for no apparent reason at all. I'm having a hard time thinking of anything to say about it because my apathy is speaking very loudly right now. I really liked the first book (a Scottish inspired fantasy with romantic elements), even if it wasn't a favorite or anything, but by the time I got to this one I just didn't care anymore! I honestly could have DNFed and never thought about it again. This does not seem to be the average reaction! Especially for people who liked the first book, as I did. I can't explain it! this series is definitely different from all other fantasy books ive read and im not sure how to describe the vibes it gave me but it felt like i was in the setting of the movie brave with this enchanted forest and whisps and elemental spirits all around me!! Adaira-I really loved how Adaira's more fierce nature really came out to play once she went to live in the West. I loved how she navigated finding her footing in a new place and how she embraced all sides of herself. Her interactions with her parents were so touching and I felt for all them. I wished we also got more of them together and had more insight into them becoming a family. Sidra had never seen an ailment so unearthly, and she thought about the magical afflictions she had healed in the past. There were two kinds: wounds made by enchanted blades, and illnesses that came as a consequence of wielding magic. Weavers who wove secrets into plaids and smiths who hammered spells into steel. Fishermen who knotted nets with charms and cobblers who made shoes from leather and dreams. In the east, casting magic through one’s craft exacted a painful, physical cost, and Sidra had an array of tonics to ease the symptoms.

With lush worldbuilding and lyrical prose, A RIVER ENCHANTED feels like the echo of a folktale from a world right next to our own’ The focus of this entire story is one of healing. Whether that is the healing of an individual’s physical body, the healing of romantic or familial relationships, the healing of the earth or the healing of a nation, every quest embarked upon is done with healing as treasure to be attained. I love how we see this in such a variety of ways in both the physical realm and the spiritual realm. And I still love so much how one of the ways healing comes here is through music. That resonates with me so strongly. There were certain scenes toward the end that made my heart ache, but in such a cathartic way. Ross wrapped up the story beautifully; there’s nothing I would change.

Vividly imagined . . . This will appeal to lovers of fantasy from NAME OF THE WIND to the Earthsea series' Ross creates a magical story with lyrical prose that draws the reader into the tale and its setting. Recommend this series to fans of Jeffe Kennedy, Susanna Clarke, and Terry Brooks." — Library Journal At once a fast-paced mystery and a love story as warm as a hearth . . . This is a classic in the making." — Ava Reid, internationally bestselling author of The Wolf and the Woodsman, on A River Enchanted She let them all go because he was her home, her shelter. Her endless fire, burning through the dark.

If I am weak for wanting you, then let me embrace that weakness and make it my strength,” he said, his gaze fixed on the west. “And if you must haunt me, then let me haunt you in return.” This novel is richer and better than the first in the series, building on and adding to the deep elemental world that Ross has constructed and supported by well-forged, believable relationships and friendships. The twists are compelling, the narrative developments are well paced, and the way everything comes together is satisfyingly neat while still feeling unexpected. Ross has skillfully brought her duology to an exciting and emotional end." — Booklist (starred review) I really loved this series; it was a solid four-star duology throughout and that is really great! The only thing I would say is that some things felt very underdeveloped to me and left me a tiny bit disappointed. Moray's storyline felt like a plot device and a missed opportunity, we never really got to see his motivations for wanting to find Adaira. I was expecting more answers there. The ending also felt really anti-climactic, and I think an epilogue could have really helped tie up all the loose ends that were left hanging bc the ending felt really abrupt to me and left me with so many questions. A sublime mix of romance, intrigue and myth, A RIVER ENCHANTED is a stunning addition to the canon of Celtic-inspired fantasy. With its lyrical prose and tight world building, this story is both modern and timeless, drawing from the traditions of genre greats like Steven Lawhead and marrying them to the sensibilities of modern works like Genevieve Gornichec’s THE WITCH’S HEART and Tana French’s IN THE WOODS’

Sand had gathered under her nails and between her fingers. She could feel it coating her teeth. “I’ll wait here with him.” Vividly imagined . . . But now Bane, the spirit of the North Wind, has pushed everything off-kilter in a bid to claim dominion over human and spirit alike. The left one peeled away to reveal a pale leg and a huge foot that the boy was still growing into. Nothing out of the ordinary. Perhaps Sidra was mistaken. She almost stopped her investigation, but then the tide came again, as if urging her along. Foam and broken conches and the hook of a shark’s tooth swirled around her. Torin imagined Sidra stepping into this chamber. This was the room where he was destined to sleep beside her, a chamber where he would draw sighs from her mouth and hold her against his skin, night after night. These were the walls that would shleter them for the remainder of their days on the isle." Sidra remained at Hamish’s side. She wasn’t sure what had afflicted the boy. What had possibly crept beneath his skin and stained his blood, weighing him down in the water, causing him to drown.
