For example, I felt it alert me that I was within 2min of entering deco (you can select the alert time) through both the wrist of my 7mm wetsuit and a 4mm compressed neoprene drysuit sleeve.

Shearwater dive computers also come at a very keen price point! In fact, it can definitely be said that they are exceptional value for money– and this very capable decompression computer is no exception. When you are ready to use this feature, you will know how to set it, and you will be thankful you have had this feature. If the battery is not meeting performance specifications within the 2-year warranty period, it will be repaired free of charge. Variations to battery lifespan can be expected due to operating at extremes of the rated specification, such as high environmental temperatures or repeatedly fully discharging the battery.

I really like the dive log of the Peregrine that logs up to 200 hours of information which is more than most other dive computers out there. The Peregrine also has Bluetooth connectivity with Shearwater’s desktop or phone (Android/iOS) app, which lets you upload your dive logs to Shearwater’s cloud-based server and view them on the app.

Currently the only application available for Apple devices is Dive Log by More Mobile Software, although we understand that there are more in the works.

Simple and Powerful

By incorporating gradient factors, the Bühlmann model becomes adaptable, creating the ability to alter the algorithm and change the acceptable levels of tissue tension. This allows the diver to make deco stops at different depths and durations than the original Bühlmann model plans for. What Does This Mean for the Diver? In terms of ergonomics, the Peregrine, like the Perdix & Petrel 2, uses a 2 button interface but they are actual buttons, you can feel what happens.

Even when I Santos Dived into deco and was on the stop the Peregrine, the decompression displays of which I hadn’t studied, was a breeze to follow. It helps that deco and safety stops will clear accompanied by legends such as “Decompression Completed” flashing up. Enter your surface gas-consumption rate and the Peregrine also calculates how much gas you’ll need and adds that to the display. You can set a specific time, such as three, four or five minutes, or select Adaptive for your safety stop. Adaptive takes into account whether you hit 30m or got within 5min of your NDL and adjusts the safety stop to 5min. Otherwise it chooses 3min. We do not produce the apps for Apple or Android products. The only software that we produce is Shearwater Desktop, which runs on Mac and PC. Meanwhile, I simply initiate my safety stop countdown by going up to >6 m, then continue pootling around. If I accidentally go under 8 m (it happens… often), it’ll pause the countdown. It won’t restart unless you go under 11 m. The actual countdown is good too: you get a min:sec readout. Setting 3 can be expected to clear faster because it will be the optimum depth in outgassing terms, but 6 provides more margin to recover control if you inadvertently ascend a little. Altitude adjustment can be set to auto or user-selected.
