About this deal

When the Waldorf Astoria opened on Park Avenue in 1931, it was the tallest hotel in the world. While its record height has since been topped, the institution is set to make history again when its ultra-plush residences open in 2022 after a five-year renovation. Jean-Louis Deniot was in charge of this reboot and Boca do Lobo Blog has even previously unveiled the luxury amenities in the penthouse areas. The exterior of the Waldorf Astoria New York. The residences at The Towers sit above the 375-key hotel. In the first zone at the head of the jet, one can sit in the comfortable armchairs covered in ivory colored leather with taupe colored inserts and contrasting Bordeaux colored piping. The armchairs in the second zone are also covered by the same ivory leather, but have inserts in lighter colored perforated leather, and are finished with a taupe colored piping. The third zone houses a sleek sofa upholstered in a fabric with a motif in the style of Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann that conveniently converts into a double bed when necessary. In the salon, a bronze table by Ado Chale is topped with 19th-century Etruscan pieces and a Wedgwood urn, and a pair of Louis XVI chairs are covered in a Zimmer & Rohde velvet; the 17th-century giltwood mirror is flanked by bronze Empire sconces, the Sputnik-style chandelier is from the 1950s, the rug is Moroccan, and the wall panels are painted in Stonington Gray by Benjamin Moore. The stormy-sky mural painted by artist Mathias Kiss in the stair hall. I really enjoy the juxtaposition of Kiss’s abstract treatment on top of the original building’s rather academic 19th-century design. It loosens up the formal structure. The mural makes the original architecture all but disappear, opening up the confined space into something that feels limitless and boundless. It’s a poetic way to bring guests up to their private quarters. The Antique Accoutrement The hotel occupies a late-19th-century Haussmannian building whose staid exterior belies the wonders found within. The standout for Jean-Louis Deniot is the 82-foot Starlight Pool that overlooks Park Avenue in a double-height space on the 18th floor. A first for the hotel, the pool occupies a former ballroom and features a blue-and-white-porcelain-inspired colour palette that subtly nods to the current owner, China’s Dajia Insurance Group (formerly Anbang Insurance Group). The Presidential Library nods to the hotel’s history of hosting American dignitaries. The Grand Salon is the residences’ main space for entertaining. The book itself is proof that, at 48, he has already gone at least some way to achieving his goal. It features 18 different projects in 13 different places, ranging from his own home in the Hollywood Hills to an 18,000-square-foot triplex at the top of a Bangkok skyscraper. Others include a modernist villa in Miami Beach, the dacha on Yves Saint Laurent’s former property in Normandy (which Deniot refurbished for its current owners); an apartment in Moscow; and the gardens of his vacation home in Tangier, Morocco. As a kid Jean-Louis Deniot have attended the Ecole Camondo as it is one of the most prestigious schools in the business. There he studied contemporary styles and concepts which enabled him to develop his analytic capacities and creative mind, but he rapidly felt that the program was too limiting. That is the reason why he started to work at the age of 21, managing renovations and undertaking apartment restorations. He was also passionate about art history and architecture, which led him, upon graduating, to open his own agency. The school provided him with solid credibility because of its untarnished reputation and his own work gave him the confidence he needed. The master bedroom’s headboard in a Kirkby Design fabric, bench, and nightstands are custom, and the walls are upholstered in a Pierre Frey fabric. The armchair is by Deniot for George Smith, the custom bedding is in Loro Piana and Lelièvre fabrics, and the 1950s chandelier is by Lalique. Simon Upton Water is also very present in another of the book’s projects — a 5,400-square-foot villa overlooking the Mediterranean on the French island of Corsica, whose design was largely inspired by the unique natural surroundings. The tones of the local soil and olive trees made their way into the palette, and Deniot commissioned the Paris-based decorative artist Florence Girette to paint the vaulted ceiling in the dining room the color of the local lauze stone. Underneath it, Deniot set a Jean Prouvé table, placing it diagonally. “Otherwise, it would have looked too much like a canteen,” he explains. The other furniture includes a pair of curvaceous Vladimir Kagan sofas, Poul Kjærholm’s iconic PK24 chaise longue and a dramatic 1950s chandelier by the Austrian architect Oswald Haerdtl that is composed of several dozen white-glass globes. “It looks like pills on the ceiling,” quips Deniot. The Corsica dining area contains a teak table by Pierre Jeanneret and a set of ca. 1950 rush-and-ebonized-wood chairs by Charlotte Perriand. Deniot designed the oak shelving system on the left; on the right is a Hans Wegner Flag Halyard armchair. The mobile above the dining table is by Xavier Veilhan.

In the rooms, a mix of seating shapes and forms — some from the Louis XVI period, others, like a little round Sputnik pouf, from much later — offers a panorama of eras, styles and tastes, ensuring an unexpected but harmonious encounter of genres. The Devilish Detail August 7, 2017At Paris’s recently opened 45-room Nolinski hotel, French architect and interior designer Jean-Louis Deniot (above) reimagined a former office building as a fantastical place to spend the night. Top: A spiraling central staircase brings guests up to their rooms from the hotel’s ground floor public salons. I always want to get as far as possible from the white box. My interiors are about atmosphere, character, texture, and a sense of harmony.”Deniot is known for layering—art and furniture from different periods, custom-made pieces with one-of-a-kind antiques—with inviting harmony and elegance. Deniot’s timeless and glamorous rooms possess an almost cinematic aesthetic without being either too formal or trendy. November 20, 2022“Very early on in my career, I made it a personal challenge to work in as many locations as possible,” recounts French interior designer Jean-Louis Deniot in his recently published monograph, Destinations ( Rizzoli), written by Pamela Golbin. To convert the former office building into a hotel, the Evok group, the hotel’s owner, turned to designer Jean-Louis Deniot, known for creating elevated, eclectic residences in France and abroad. At the Nolinski, Deniot transformed what he describes as “classic office space, with white walls and drop ceilings” into the epitome of his signature timeless, tailored and unequivocally luxe look. Interiors also shows off Deniot’s ability to successfully translate his style stateside. The book finishes with his own Regency-style house in Los Angeles, where he brought in subdued creams, browns and grays, and mixed his particular brand of modernism, inspired by the great French decorators who preceded him, with a fresh California look. He employed decorative accents in gold and silver, adding, say, Stiffel bronze lamps and custom pieces from Jean de Merry, a local showroom.

The Palais Garnier and the Comédie Française. I had the idea to create a contemporary version of theatrical decor, as if the guests were on a stage. The Palette Amid all this, a small jewel box of a hotel quietly made its debut last September. The Nolinski comprises 45 rooms and suites, plus a brasserie, the clubby Grand Salon and a subterranean spa and pool, all spread across the six floors of an 1880 Haussmannian edifice near the Palais Garnier, Palais Royal, Louvre and Tuileries.Featured on the ELLE Decor and AD 100 lists of the world’s preeminent talents in architecture and interior design, Jean-Louis Deniot has long been in the business of creating atmospheres. His décors are his playground, spaces where spontaneity and magic are de rigueur. Recognized worldwide for his eclectic and emblematic interiors, Jean-Louis Deniot plays in a multiplicity of repertoires, letting his academic training translate into a vocabulary that is both informal and bold. Listen to yourself, to choose what feels right. Whatever seems logical to you, follow your instinct and learn from those who’ve had great careers.” I favor the rooms and suites on the building’s second floor, where the ceilings are at their highest, something typical of classic Parisian buildings. I really enjoy medium-sized rooms with the tallest ceiling possible. It gives that instant palatial feeling. The Comforts of Home
