Khan delivers so much more than a clever sci-fi story. She also delivers more than 'romance'. There is a depth to her writing that stretches my aching heart, delves deftly into the human condition and the nature of suffering, and leaves me feeling both expanded and emotionally shattered at the same time. I don't want the story to end. I may have heard it recommended somewhere or it was on a list of sorts. Regardless, I had no idea really what I was reading when I started. I didn’t know Pop Pop had been feeling weak and tired. The grown-ups would never tell me something like that. When I was with him that day he was his usual self—warm, funny, playful. He must have summoned all his strength to appear healthy to me. Three days after my visit, Pop Pop went to see his doctor. The doctor gave him the devastating news that he had leukemia. In November the production moved to Australia and filming began in Stanley, Tasmania [27] where the crews transformed some locations in the town including the pier, which was refurbished, and the road, which was covered in gravel. [28] [29] Production wrapped on November 24, 2014. [30] Post-production [ edit ] I like that the author also made me put down this book to do a search on whether or not Paris really had public phone booths. That was a tidbit of information I did not know because I honestly never thought about it.

But the ending was phenomenal. I'm not happy about what happens because it is tragic and sad, but I like the fact Andrew Fukuda stayed realistic with his storytelling and the ending reflected that. One of the issues that's been brought up about this film is its over-reliance on pulling at your heart strings. It's a valid argument, especially considering all of the tragedy and horrible circumstances that occur. I can't really say it's a film I will revisit, but at the same time, I found Cianfrance's directing and the performances enough to get over the depressing nature of the film's plot. It's not an easy watch by any stretch of the imagination, but it's an important one for sure. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese Americans were extremely discriminated against, which isn't talked a ton about in history. They were forced to move out of their homes onto a Japanese only island to hold "the criminals". Around the same time Hitler is taking over, the same general things happened to Charlie. They continue to write each other, being each other's happiness during difficult times. Rachel Weisz joins Michael Fassbender in Derek Cianfrance's 'The Light Between Oceans' ". slashfilm.com. When everything is done and the war is over, Alex makes a pit stop in Paris holding out hope that somehow Charlie survived. But it's here that he gets his second confirmation that Charlie is most likely dead. By some miracle her bedroom is basically untouched and Alex fully realizes just how much his friendship meant to Charlie, as her room is decorated with all the drawings he had sent her over the years. I also love how Laura has parts in this book that shows scientific tests and results to show that what she does is legit and that it is also very likely that all of us have this capability/switch in our brains to enter the altered state. This story is about a friendship between two people that have never met but are bound to each other through these letters. It is like the quote from Jane Eyre: "I have a strange feeling with regard to you. As if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs, tightly knotted to a similar string in you. And if you were to leave I'm afraid the cord of communion would snap."This was a wonderful book. I happened on this book quite by chance but decided to give it a try and I am so glad that I did. I have read quite a few books set during World War II over the years and usually find them heartbreaking and powerful. This was a really unique story that really did grab me. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to read this powerful novel.
