Description

For budget kayaks, you can use pretty much any electric pump—for example, the sorts of pump you use to inflate air mattresses—because there is minimal air pressure required, only air volume (see the “Pressure Range” section below for a fuller explanation). There is a carry handle built into the pump to help with portability. Although I’m not sure how portable any electric SUP pump has to be as the thing it has to plug into your car, either way, it does make it easy to carry to your car. Right from the get-go this pump is different to others available in the UK. Instead of a digital display and +/- buttons to set your intended pressure, you have to turn a dial. Once you plug it into your car, press the on button and away it goes. Straight away you’ll see the analogue pressure gauge jumping around like crazy, so it’s hard to know what pressure the board is at. The needle seems to settle a little with more pressure, but it didn’t fill me with the same confidence as the HIKS or Outdoor Master digital display. I’ve had electric pumps that lasted me for 2+ years of regular use, as well as pumps that burned out within 2-3 months. Like the Shark, the Whale is a powerful dual stage pump that offers easy inflation. It has a high volume 1st stage and at approximately 1 psi it automatically switches to the high pressure 2nd stage for fast high pressure inflation. The Whale can pump up to a maximum of 16 psi. It can inflate to any desired pressure in 0.5 psi increments. It can inflate on battery power or running off of 12 volt power. It can’t pump as high as the Shark 2 which can pump up to 20 psi. 16 psi covers the majority of inflatable SUPs out there which top out at 12.5-15psi. Inflate and deflate

A downside of this one is that you need to be close to your car to inflate your kayak. The DC cord is 9-feet in length and the inflation hose is 4.5-feet. Pros For the noise, we used an app called ‘Sound meter’ that records decibels using the mobile phone speaker. The test took place in a quiet area, so hopefully gives a good indication of the noise. We tried to simulate real-world conditions, like placing the pump on the pavement. It has a secure base for stability while in use. It also benefits from having a non-slip handle for better grip. And you’ll find a pressure gauge built-into the top of the pump so that it’s easy to see. It’s absolutely critical that you give the pump the cool-down time it needs to avoid damaging or breaking it. Power Supply This pump is noisy like every other electric paddleboard pump. It has a similar noise level to the Shark 2 pump when it goes into it’s second high pressure stage. The Whale has a small LED screen on it that displays everything you need to know. It has real time pressure monitoring down to a .01 PSI. It shows target pressure and current pressure in PSI or bar. It shows battery charge status. It shows whether the cooling fan is running or not. It has a digital LCD PSI display so you can watch the pressure increase in real time. You can also set the target pressure for your inflatable kayak or SUP and the pump will automatically stop once it reaches that pressure. Most Outdoor Master® electric pump for inflatable stand up paddle board have both inflating and deflating features using two separate nozzles, with the exception of the Dolphin. The inflation process is a two-stage procedure that automatically shuts down once the required pressure level is reached.

The Best Electric Pumps for Inflatable Kayaks and SUPs Best Overall: TOPUMP 7500 mAh Rechargeable SUP Air Pump During the test, I let the pump run until auto shut off, but instead of stopping at the 15 PSI I set, it continued to 17 PSI. If you’re going to inflate your SUP or kayak, make sure to do so using a pump that’s purpose-built for the task! A Buyer’s Guide to Electric Pumps for SUPs and Inflatable Kayaks: Factors to Consider Valve Compatibility The Shark II comes with 5 different nozzles, so you can use it for dinghy, kayaks and inflatable pools, which is very handy. The HIKS pump took 8 minutes and 25 seconds to inflate a Bluefin Cruise to 15 PSI. This was the second-fastest on the test, but very close to the Outdoor Master. Leaky: Some users complain that the pump may leak air from the hose or the valve, which reduces the efficiency and accuracy of the inflation. Manual pumps can be either hand pumps or foot pumps. Foot pumps for inflatable kayaks are generally not as easy to find as hand pumps. As you can see in my detailed review of the Nixy pump, it can inflate 10+ SUPs in a row, it just keeps on going. This hand pump comes with a built-in pressure gauge and can deliver a maximum pressure of 10 PSI. It comes with fittings for stem, Halkey-Roberts, and Boston valves. Pros
