Description

Good operations management is not only crucial to success in business, but critical to our survival. Now in its second edition, Operations Management retains its engaging writing style and balanced approach of quantitative and qualitative material. With integrated theories and real-world examples, this new edition presents increasingly important principles, applicable to both service and manufacturing contexts, in a clear and captivating way. Containing everything necessary to understand this fascinating and everevolving field, this textbook will soon become indispensable. For a more detailed dive into the history of operations management, I recommend Levinson's take on the global supply chain. I have read this book in my Masters at Chalmers University of Technology as the main Operations Management textbook. Notable Quote: ”Hierarchies are critical in enabling networks to reach larger sizes before diseconomies of scale set in. This is why so many networks in the natural and computer worlds are structured as networks within networks.”

The Hedgehog Concept (Simplicity within the Three Circles): To go from good to great requires transcending the curse of competence. This Operations Management textbook focuses on the sustainable and socially responsible imperatives of operations management, using over 120 cases and illustrations of real-life operations around the world.Notable Quote: ”In a larger business context, an example of the ‘Genius of the And’ would be a company’s constant attention to both long-term growth and quarterly results.” With persuasive evidence, Stalk and Hout document that time consumption, like cost, is quantifiable and therefore manageable. Today's new-generation companies recognize time as the fourth dimension of competitiveness and, as a result, operate with flexible manufacturing and rapid-response systems, and place extraordinary emphasis on R&D and innovation. Factories are close to the customers they serve. Organizations are structured to produce fast responses rather than low costs and control. Companies concentrate on reducing if not eliminating delays and using their response advantage to attract the most profitable customers. Despite the wide-spread popularity of lean across almost every sector around the world, it remains a subject that is widely misunderstood in practice. A Culture of Discipline: When you combine a culture of discipline with an ethic of entrepreneurship, you get the magical alchemy of great results. Technology Accelerators: Good-to-great companies think differently about the role of technology. Notable Quote: ”We have to change the culture from one in which people simply do their own job in their own function to make their own numbers look good (a vertical focus) to one in which people are focused horizontally on the customer and on improving value streams that deliver value across functions.”

In my opinion this should always be part ofoperations management textbooks. To the best of our knowledge, Operations Management by Jay Heizer and Barry Render is one of the best "classic" operations management book out there. The reasons are that it's widely used in MBA program around the world and it's one of the most highly cited OM books. If you would like to learn how to use operations management tools and techniques, this book is the ideal resource for you. Revised end-of-chapter content to test comprehension, including Review Questions, Discussion Questions and Problems Today, time is the cutting edge. In fact, as a strategic weapon, contend George Stalk, Jr., and Thomas M. Hout, time is the equivalent of money, productivity, quality, even innovation. In this path-breaking book based upon ten years of research, the authors argue that the ways leading companies manage time—in production, in new product development, and in sales and distribution—represent the most powerful new sources of competitive advantage.

Peter Jones, Emeritus Professor in Hospitality Management, Surrey Business School, and Peter Robinson, Senior Teaching Fellow in Operations Management, Surrey Business School Notable Quote: ”Here I’d like to introduce the concept of leverage, which is the output generated by a specific type of work activity. An activity with high leverage will generate a high level of output; an activity with low leverage, a low level of output.”Notable Quote: ”The ‘non-profit’ institution neither supplies goods or services not controls. Its ‘product’ is neither a pair of shoes nor an effective regulation. Its product is a changed human being. The non-profit institutions are human-change agents. Their ‘product’ is a cured patient, a child that learns, a young man or woman grown into a self-respecting adult; a changed human life altogether.” Written by best-selling authors in the field, this Operations Management book inspires a critical and applied mastery of the core principles and process which are fundamental to successfully managing business operations. Approaching the subject from a managerial perspective, this brand-new text provides clear and concise coverage of the nature, principles, and practice of operations and process management.
