About this deal

Comparing Kingston A400’s claimed 500MB/s read and 320MB/s write speeds for the 240 GB model with the results from CrystalDiskMark, we see that there’s a huge gap in write performance. Sequential performance is good, but not that good either. 4K is where Kingston A400 rises against its opponents. This workaround is to change your system storage mode from RAID to AHCI and should work on all systems. The rear shows the SATA connector being laser etched with the capacity of the drive. The 960GB capacity suggests that the drive reserves a bit of its capacity as a cache to boost performance, as it is a DRAM-less drive, as most “low-end” units are. In general, this is not good news, but when it comes to the cost-sensitive segment of the market where the demands placed on the device are rather limited, this can be an acceptable trade-off. Powered by a latest-gen controller for read and write speeds up to 500MB/s and 450MB/s, this SSD is 10x faster than a traditional hard drive¹ for higher performance, ultra-responsive multi-tasking, and an overall faster system. The best method of preventing ESD is to use an ESD wrist strap or an earthing mat or table. However, because most users do not have access to these items, we have included the below steps to help reduce the chance of ESD as much as possible. A400 is available in capacities of up to 1.92TB to suit anyone’s needs. Ideal for desktops and notebooks In the meantime, I’ll see if I have time to give some of those tools a whirl – at the moment, I’m collecting some experimental data to the drive, so I’m going to have to wait until I can afford some data destruction.

Testing with CrystalDiskMark seems to show read performance a little slower than what SATA3 is capable of, although the random 4k access performance does not seem too bad. I suppose this may be because these benchmarks utilise only a small portion of the drive (1GB) which makes it easy for the drive to deliver better numbers as it might reside in a pSLC cache (assuming it has one). The results from Anvil’s Storage Utilities confirms the drive to be a very average SATA SSD, although again, these tests only use a limited amount of the capacity, thus hiding the nasty behaviour of the SSD once it fills up.

Product Reviews

The copy benchmark resulted in some surprising numbers that exceed the capability of the SATA3 interface and may have been impacted by write caching on the system. I consider these results potentially anomalous.
