It holds wheelbases up to 47 inches and can handle tires up to 3 inches wide, with a load capacity of up to 40 pounds per bike. The lighter weight makes it easy to install or remove, but thanks to the low-profile foldaway design, you won’t be taking it off. You’ll hardly know it’s there until you need it. Unlike the Rambo Trailer, this one from Quietkat attaches to the rear wheel axle. This means it might not be suited to e-bikes that have a rear hub motor, and instead would work best for mid-drive bikes. Other than this, it’s easy to assemble and hitch to the bike, it isn’t an overly heavy trailer and, providing you don’t try to go too fast, it offers a comfortable and secure ride for your kids without breaking the bank. We haven’t included them here, but there are many cargo trailers on the market designed primarily for city use – and a variety of DIY schematics to be found online for those handy with a welding torch. Our friends at Campfire Cycling in Tucson – longtime trailer fans – have compiled a great DIY roundup, which you can read here.

The bolt-on axle (a.k.a. solid axle) has a hex nut on both sides. It is common on fixed gear and single speed bicycles, as well as internally geared hubs. Thru Axle It’s also handy that it includes a large, sturdy and enclosed box that sits on the main frame of the trailer. This makes it perfect for transporting items in bad weather conditions, and it’ll ensure you can store a multitude of smaller, loose things safely. You’re not going to have to worry about securing them to the frame, losing them or them getting damaged in transit.Hooded dropouts have a protruding metal hood that extends around the top of the dropout. They are common on custom or hand-made bikes. They can prevent the Steel Hitch from sitting flush against the frame. This problem is solved by the adapters which you will read about later. These 5mm skewers replace the existing QR skewer on your bike to make it compatible with the Coho XC cargo trailer. This adapter is required to use the Coho XC on bikes with QR skewers. Multiple skewer lengths are available. Then You Need: Coho 5mm Skewer A Bolt-On Axle I’ve personally used many different bike trailers with my kids over the past 6+ years on a variety of bikes, including a road bike, mountain bike, hybrid bike, and even a cruiser! Dog bicycle trailers are designed for cycling trips and days out with your dog. It's safe to transport larger, somewhat heavier dogs like Labradors in them, dogs that don't fit into a basket on the transport carrier or luggage carrier.

Watch out, children can even fall fast asleep as they’re being towed along. On a trailer cycle, if they fall asleep they generally fall off. Tag-along trailers are a good alternative. Is a tag-a-long or tow bar the right choice for you? Most of the time you won’t get that much help in powering along. Yet when your co-rider does pedal in earnest, you will feel it and it does make a difference.Bike trailers are growing in popularity as a way to allow your younger kids to come on adventures with you. Unlike bike seats, you can get trailers that can accommodate two kids – like this one from Instep – and they keep them protected if the weather turns while you’re out. Provided you get your pet used to it gradually, it can also work for transporting smaller breed dogs too. Bike trailers use a hitch arm and coupler attachment that can easily attach to any kind of bike, including road bikes, mountain bikes, cruisers, hybrid bikes, e-bikes, and even thru-axle disc brakes. A brake isn’t necessary for the trailer cycle and could even be dangerous. Used at the wrong time, such as when you’re not braking, the trailer cycle would skid. July 2022 update: This trailer bike has now been discontinued. We’ve left left it in the listing as it’s worth seeking out second hand, and there is a possibility it will be reintroduced into the range again.

I have attached every major bike trailer brand to many different types of bikes, including a cruiser, hybrid bike, mountain bike, road bike, and disc brake bike. This guide covers everything I’ve learned about attaching bike trailers, plus more. The design also accommodates e-bikes, fat-tire bikes (as wide as 5 inches), and 20 to 29-inch wheels plus bases up to 52 inches. Bikes with fenders are also welcome here.

Unfortunately, no one has yet figured out how to make a truly universal attachment system (I want to be the first!). A seatpost hitch is fine, so long as the turn pivot is vertical rather than parallel to the seatpost. Ideally you want some kind of ball joint rather than a universal joint, so that the bicycle (towing bike) and tricycle (trailer cycle) can corner without the bicycle trying to make the tricycle lean – something it can only do with one wheel in the air! It has a very generous 150lb weight capacity and folds down to a more compact size when it isn’t in use. This trailer also has a grab handle that makes it easy to move it around when it isn’t attached to the bike and, at just 25lbs, it isn’t too cumbersome. Most bicycles will have a standard dropout. They won’t all look like this, but the key thing to look for is a flat area around and below the axle where the Steel Hitch can sit flush against the frame. Hooded Dropout Most higher-end models offer adaptor accessories to work with internal hubs and different dropouts, but it can take some research to figure out what works with what – the Robert Axle Project is a great place to head if your bike has thru-axles.

With a single-wheel trailer cycle, you’re ill advised to ride with a child more than half your own weight because the twisting forces that the trailer cyclist exerts on the towing bike can upset the steering. A trailer tricycle won’t tip the towing bike’s balance like this because it doesn’t lean; it’s always upright. The Radical Cyclone is another two-wheel trailer that’s been around for many years, and is now available in various options, including a bare-bones cargo version (€519.95) which looks like it would be a great option for lashing on all manner of gear, and even the alloy subframe (€369.95) for home customisation. The difference in cornering between towing bike and trailer tricycle is not a problem at modest speeds – say, 15mph and below. It is a problem if you hit a corner going faster, especially if it’s off-camber. Trailer tricycle passengers must lean into the corner or the trailer cycle may roll out of the corner onto its side.

Now that you know what type of axle and dropout you have, you can use the table below to determine if you need additional parts to connect your Burley trailer. Toe clips are useful to keep your child’s feet on the pedals. That’s better for balance and for fast pedalling, although it’s not as important as it would be on a tandem. A:It will depend on the size and threading of your axle. Use the Adapter Guide and Axle Fit Guide in Step 4 to determine which part is right for you. If you are opting for a second-hand trailer, bear in mind that for regular, off-pavement adventures, we’d always recommend choosing one of the more reputable trailers on the market. A trailer designed for riding mellow rail trails and bike paths will be different from one intended for more rugged terrain, and this will always be reflected in the price, and in the case of child trailers, a form of suspension. But if your needs are more modest, there are all kinds of keenly priced options to be found on Craigslist and the like.
