About this deal

First, thanks to NetGalley for the chance to review this copy of Hypericon's English-translated edition. I have a PhD with a dissertation on comics (Lisbon/Leuven) and I work professionally as a teacher, translator and curator.

And lastly, I'm guessing that the author intended there to be significance in Teressa finally overcoming her chronic insomnia and being able to sleep through the TV coverage of a major world event (no spoilers, but I'm sure that you can guess). I understand it's meant to evoke handwritten notes, but I shouldn't have to squint to understand what was written. Overall, a very enjoyable read in which my only critiques are that some connections felt like they were included a little more as asides than subtly interwoven threads - especially the namesake plant which felt thrown in at the end of the story versus having been woven into the text earlier.

I've been writing criticism about comics since the early 2000s, as well as about illustration, animation and imagetext relationships. Teresa meets Ruben, but he may not offer her the stability she needs as her insomnia frays her fragile mind. I had to go back and reread the plot synopsis to understand why the HELL there was a scene with 9/11 of all things! It seems to be a rumination on the connection between the past and the future -- the latter symbolized by the 9/11 attack, which ends the book.
