To set up the game, you need to place the game board on a flat surface, choose a character pawn and place it on the matching colour start space, place the furniture tokens on the matching spaces, choose a base of each colour and stick a label on it, place the labelled bases under the furniture tokens and the character pawns without looking at them, and give each player a detective notepad and a pencil.
