Hairdryer diffusers, on the other hand, delicately distribute the air so curls dry evenly, and without excess frizz. Then, when you're ready to dry the lengths of your hair, you can gently place a section of hair in the diffuser 'hand' and raise towards your scalp. If you've ever bought a new hairdryer and wondered what on earth the diffuser attachment is, or better yet, left it in the box to gather dust, you're not alone! So, what is a hair diffuser? What's its purpose? And why can't you just use a regular hairdryer attachment to dry your curly hair? If you have individual curls that aren't curling up so well, you can also go in and add some product to them and finger coil by twisting around your finger in the direction of the curl. Repeat steps two to four.

The diffuser attachment is included, along with a few other attachments, in case you feel like mixing up your style. Sieve or Collander: While it sounds crazy, it does work! I tried this once and was pleasantly surprised with the results. This little kitchen essential works in the same way as a diffuser, gently dispersing the air out of the hairdryer, so it doesn't focus on one section and blast your curls. With its diffuser, the Dyson Supersonic is many hairdressers' go-to for drying curly hair, including Jonny Eagland, senior stylist at John Frieda Salons, whose advice would be to go for it if your budget allows. “The airflow is so gentle and it has three different heat and speed settings, but it’s also super lightweight, so it won’t stress your shoulders when holding for a fair amount of time,” he says. If hair health is a huge priority for you and your curls, this could be just the thing when combined with hair repair products (our K18 review is an ideal treatment for fragile curls). When firing up this tool we did notice that it’s ever so slightly noisier than a number of the other dryers we selected for this roundup, but it’s still noticeably quieter than your traditional roaring hair dryer motor. What followed was a nice drying experience, with our hair left feeling nice and soft without excess frizz– two things that scored a lot of points with our testers. Learning to style and care for my natural hair has been a journey, and one that I am so happy I decided to take a chance on. There was a point where I thought my kinks and coils were destined for chronic dryness and breakage. But, my visits to a DevaCurl-trained curly stylist changed all of that for me. Their level of knowledge and care helped me embrace the curls that I once thought were 4c, but now realize that they are a mix of all three—4a, 4b, and 4c I think—which is an important distinction. Please note that Royal Mail currently classes perfumes, nail polishes, flammable liquids and aerosols as "hazardous materials" and will only accept a limited number of these per parcel.

The diffuser attachment, although small, works like a charm! My hairdresser dries my hair with it and I still get great volume and definition. But, let's be honest, we're not buying the Dyson Supersonic for its diffuser attachment, we're buying it because diffusing curly takes, what feels like, a lifetime! Before my first visit to a DevaCurl salon, I thought diffusers were only for loose waves and the 3-type curls we most often see in ads and shared across social media. But my Deva stylists debunked that myth and showed me how to use a diffuser properly and how important it was to prevent frizz during the drying process because it keeps us from touching our hair as it dries.Creating bounce, volume and curl definition when diffusing is all down to technique. By taking the hair, section by section, and gently lifting towards the scalp, you set the curls in place, which helps enhance curl definition and create bounce. Volume comes from the small amount of 'functional frizz' that the air from the diffuser creates as it gently dries the hair.

It's not universal, so you'll have to make sure it's the right size for your existing hairdryer, buy a new hairdryer, or tape it on (like me).

About the Brand: Founded by Lorraine Massey in 1994, Massey opened her first salon in New York City and became renowned for the "Curly Girl Method," a technique used to wash and style curly hair. About My Hair: 4c, low-porosity hair with highlights Editor’s Note: We reviewed this article on September 22, 2023. As per our editorial policy, we are constantly updating our content, to make sure it reflects the best of the best when it comes to beauty, wellness, and fashion. We want to assure our readers that we still stand by our recommendations, which we do. Size and weight: The size and weight of your dryer is important day-to-day, particularly if you're hoping to avoid arm ache. But it's even more important if you're somebody who travels regularly and wants a tool that doesn't take up too much space in your bag. Tip your head to one side, take a small section of hair and place it into the diffuser bowl. Gently bring the diffuser up to your scalp, and then turn the hairdryer on.

Unwanted Food or Drink Products - Once supply conditions are broken, there are a number of factors outside of our control that can affect the quality of a product. Therefore perishable goods such as food and drink cannot be returned. We're reluctant to use the phrase "cheap and cheerful", but this attachment from millennial pink Aussie haircare brand Mermade Hair does have the lowest price tag of all of the diffusers in our edit. It’s easy to clip on to the Mermade Dryer –which, it’s important to note, is the only tool that it's compatible with – plus it felt extremely secure once attached and stayed put throughout our blow drying session. Results-wise, it did its job of keeping frizz levels down and retaining curl definition. If like me, you're too impatient to wait for your curls to air dry (wet hair for eight hours+? No thanks!), diffusing is a great way to speed up the process. As well as drying your curls, diffusing also gives hair volume, definition and bounce. But, you've got to use the right technique - there really is an art to diffusing curly hair. The family name behind one of London’s most luxurious salon destinations, as well as a line of great hair-styling products Hershesons now offers The Great Hair Dryer, a pleasingly stylish electric blue number. It comes in a snazzy metal case complete with a leather-look handle, along with three attachments: two concentrated nozzles and a small diffuser.Jonny Eagland is senior stylist at London salon Nicola Clarke at John Frieda, as well as an ambassador for haircare brand Virtue. Technology: Look out for any special features that are incorporated into a dryer, such as ionic technology for a smoother finish, or ceramic for more even heat distribution, for example. We tested a range of hair dryers whose manufacturers billed their tools as being particularly quiet, comparing them against each other to find the quietest of the bunch. But volume wasn’t the only category we required these dryers to score highly in (or low, if we’re being technical) –we required them to be all-around excellent dryers and assessed the following factors: The Diva XXL Pro is another universal diffuser attachment. It has a large bowl that can accommodate a lot of hair, and it's not too shallow so is likely to help create good definition on both long and short hair. If you already have a diffuser attachment (ie. the one that came with your hairdryer) don't feel like you have to spend lots of money on a new one - I used the standard diffuser attachment that came with my Vidal Sassoon hairdryer for a good couple of years before branching out. But, if you think it's time for a new one, I've got a few suggestions below.
