What would he say? Maybe, “Sorry mate, haven’t got a clue. Have you tried the Gluten Free section?” I moved on to different songs and more energetic ones too. D50s kept sounding very crisp and resolving, making me excited to try it with just one more song. Bass notes are deep and weighty but well-controlled and can reveal a good amount of texture. Vocals sound clean and clear, but they also have body and presence. That is the part where D50s really distinguishes itself from D50 – midrange. It manages to connect crispiness with full-bodiness. The higher spectrum continues in the same fashion. Cymbals and bells sound clean and provide nice, long, tone decay. Yes, they sound sharp but not too harsh or tiring, which used to happen with D50.

So I hooked the D50s to my hi-fi again and sat down for an extended session. It didn’t take long for the sound drops to occur. I was using a CD from Alison Moyet, her Greatest Hits. A CD I had used within the original review. When I came across this issue during my E30 review, just one example, I subsequently shook my fist at the sky and exclaimed, in full Charlton Heston voice, “Ah damn You! God damn you to hell!” You can decide here whether to have Bluetooth on or off. This is a useful option. When not in use, I turned off the Bluetooth to reduce digital noise. THE FILTERS Obviously, the power adapters of our smartphones are different, one will better filter the mains noise, other one might not filter it at all. This is a very insightful DAC. It digs into the mix. You’ll hear every detail, the timing of decays, and how the recording was structured. This chapter alone will feel very much like that of A90 and L30 because all three amplifiers were voiced the same. I then turned to Mercy Mercy Me for Marvin Gaye, sent to the D50s via Bluetooth and was pleasantly surprised at just how good this stream sounded. Headphone Amps: Topping A50S, SMSL SP400, SH-9, Benchmark HPA4, SparkoS Labs Aries, Flux Lab Acoustics FCN-10, LittleDot MKIII SE Moving on to desktop headphones, both units are very capable of driving harder loads, but of course SH-9 was a higher output of 6W in 16 Ohms, meaning that it didn’t have issues driving headphones like Audeze LCD-4 and Hifiman Arya, which sounded great on A50S, but not spectacular. In its defense, A50S has a vaguely different tonality and instead on focusing on absolute linearity, it adds a pinch more bass and midrange making bright sources and headphones a lot more manageable. There are plenty of detail-oriented sources nowadays that are putting treble presence above anything else and A50S should work much nicer with such kinds of sources. With dynamic headphones that don’t require that much power to be moved, I wouldn’t be surprised if people would prefer the A50S in detriment of a more powerful SH-9. Beyerdynamics, most Sennheisers and all Grados should perform better on A50S and most planar-magnetics should perform better on SH-9.

Disclaimer: Topping D50S was sent to us as a review unit in exchange for our honest opinion. We thank team Apos Audio for this opportunity! DACs: Audiobyte HydraVox + HydraZap, Matrix Audio Element X, Flux Lab Acoustics FCN-10, Soncoz SGD1, Burson Conductor 3X Performance By the way, the (or one of the) Topping design engineers is a contributor to the Audio Science Review forum if the discussion of the D50s needs to be progressed. They will and do scare the technophobes amongst us and many other ordinary hi-fi fans out there. They scare me, let me tell you! What the D50s offered was a more naturalistic tonality here. The D50s offered a greater sense of character, it translated the personality of the piano, the essence of the trumpet and the nature of the bass guitar easily while the Soncoz struggled a little.
