If you see a busker using an wedge-shaped amp, and you hear a great sound, they are most probably either using this amp or the discontinued Crate Limo. The Roland CUBE Street Ex is not as good tonally as a Fishman Loudbox Artist (see below), but for the price and portability you really can’t go wrong. It is light enough to carry comfortably, it’s easy to use and the wedge shape helps with projecting your sound – a sound that is both clean and natural. As far as the Micro Cube is concerned though, try it for busking; try it for rehearsals; try it on the beach; serenade your girlfriend/boyfriend with it. It was designed to be used anywhere and everywhere, wherever you want, whenever you want. There are many good micro guitar amps around but the model that rose to the top of our ‘best mini guitar amp review’ was the Roland Micro Cube GX – one of the bestselling mini amps of all time. We believe, quite simply, it’s the best amp in its class, and it’s plenty loud enough for some serious practice despite its modest vital statistics. No prizes for guessing that this is a simulation of the legendary Roland Jazz Chorus amp. Ultra clean and fat. Adding a helping of chorus and reverb really brings this to life. Nice.

Its endless possibilities of sound, cabinet and amp modelling configurations, paired with the Spark app, make it one of the most interesting on this list. Developed by a team of guitarists looking for the ultimate tone, the THR delivers the sound you want and the feeling you need. Effects that match high-end amps, combined with room-filling reverbs and delays, catapult your sound to the next level. Combined with high-end effects, the THR5A delivers studio sounds – without a single microphone and wherever you are, with a battery-powered option. The next generation of the Micro CUBE, a classic amp, and at the time it came into the marketplace there really wasn’t much competition in the busking amp category. In recent years it has also been improved to compete with other models, but unfortunately falls short. With the Micro Cube GX, you get a wide range of effects to play with – seven to be precise. You may still want to use your own external boards and pedals – and that’s fine – but if you’re on a budget there’s plenty here to keep you out of trouble.Roland says COSM is an amalgamation of many different modeling technologies developed by Boss and Roland to recreate a specific guitar amp’s characteristics in terms of circuitry, components and sound pathways. It likens it to CGI in the film world where complex software is used to create near perfect simulations of the real thing. COSM and the Micro Cube GX

The eight presets it comes with, including an acoustic simulation and five amplifiers emulations are the following: And thanks to the focus as a practice amp or small gig amp, there is no need for a stadium-ready volume for good sound. On the contrary:the THR handle compression at low volume really well. The Roland CUBE Street is designed to be extremely versatile; it is equally at home with a folk singer as it is with a heavy metal musician. It boasts an impressive amount of amp models and effects, meaning that it is possible to perform without the need to carry many pedals with you. COSM models are available, including an acoustic simulator and a neutral setting for use with a microphone instead of a guitar. You basically have two controls. The first offers chorus, flanger, phaser, tremolo, and heavy octane – which is essentially like using an octave pedal where you hear not only the note you’re playing, but also, simultaneously, the same note an octave lower. Nice on lead work, but it can get a bit muddy on chords. Nice to have though. We see many of these acronyms used in the specifications of musical equipment and quite often they’re a combination of technology and marketing hype. Added to this is the Extreme model with ultra distortion so that together with the classic British and American amp models as well as a Roland Jazz Chorus model, all musical genres from jazz to metal are covered. The effects are distributed over two pots (Modulation FX + Rev/Dly), offering all the usual, including a new Octaver and Spring Reverb.
