But the genius of the book comes through the ‘experimental’ nature of Johnson’s writing, (or post-modern as it is described in the preface to my edition, since the author felt ‘experimental’ was merely another way of saying ‘unsuccessful’). The narrator interjects himself regularly into the text, commenting on the conventions of novel writing as he implements, or bends, those rules. It was an enjoyable read but I did feel that the concept overshadowed both the story and inner message. Christie now gravitates to actual violence, taking advice from sources such as The Anarchist Cookbook and blowing up a local tax office by placing a home-made bomb in a toy train and sending it through a tunnel adjacent to the building. Notwithstanding the advice of his mother (a sceptic, if not an agnostic or atheist), the expectation is that the ledger will be consulted on the day of reckoning, and justice will be done.

Interspersed with the main story are scenes set in Renaissance Milan in which Fra Luca Pacioli is seen teaching his theories on accountancy at the court of Ludovico Sforza. This entry was posted in 2013 New Reads, Fiction, Reviews and tagged B S Johnson, book-keeping, breaking the fourth wall, Christie Malry's Own Double-Entry, daft but somehow realistic, meta-fiction, revenge, why isn't there a film version of this book? Therefore if someone is unpleasant to him, he has to pay that person back equally so that the debit is fulfilled.

He devises his very own double-entry bookkeeping system, which he applies to his own life; “crediting” himself against society in an increasingly violent manner for perceived “debits” owed to him for being maltreated. Christie’s actions try to keep pace, becoming more extreme, more sociopathic, until, well, they become murderous. Born into a family without money, he realised early along in the game that the best way to come by money was to place himself next to it. It seems to me far more than educational access that resulted in a monk formalising the system of double-entry. Christie Malry's Own Double-Entry' is Johnson's most broadly humorous book, though as readers will discover, his humor has a bite. It may have jumped a few places given how much I enjoyed this slim novel, his penultimate one from 1973…the year Johnson committed suicide. Under the column headed 'Aggravation' for offences received from society (unpleasantness of Bank Manager; general diminution of life caused by advertising), debit Christie; under 'Recompense' for offences given back to society (general removal of items of stationery; Pork Pie Purveyors Ltd.

Johnson was painfully aware of the artifice of the novel, fed-up of conventional narrative styles and the failings of the novel as an art form. I hadn’t thought of “The Diceman” in years, but there was a brief time when I found it profoundly affecting.Unlike most people, he doesn't necessarily like what he sees, so he does something about it, albeit with his author’s hands or the hands his author supplied him. He agrees with society that he can’t walk on the road for fear of being hit by a vehicle, but is perturbed by the fact he can’t walk any other way, as there is a building in the way which has no relevance to him.
