Living in the city of Salisbury to this day, he has become part of the character of the city itself, with its huge cathedral and long history. After having a pathway named after him with the ‘Rutherfurd Walk’ just off of the medieval marketplace, his place there has been cemented for years to come. With a number of books on the horizon as well, he has plenty more novels left in him yet, as he will continue writing on into the foreseeable future. Then there's the fabric of London itself, the persistence of landmarks and street patterns... This epic work really does bring history alive in your as Rutherford moves from chapter to chapter effortlessly tracing the history of the remarkable city London and 5 remarkable families .There is not a dull moment and this should really awaken any interest you may have in history

Edward Rutherfurd - Wikipedia

Aristocrats and stonemasons, brewers and grocers, aldermen and prostitutes, forgers and bodysnatchers, every class and type is to be found in the great river of life that, like the River Thames itself, flows ceaselessly through LONDON. Lazy and engrossing way to read History.Salt and pepper sprinklingl of anecdote and humour keeps the reader chipping along. Rutherfurd's is a marathon task... I think that he pulls it off. LONDON: the Novel could hook you on history for life.'

With awards for his work and contributions to the field in general, he has created a long and impressive legacy. Establishing himself as a key figure within the industry, this legacy will continue on for some time yet. This is something that appears not to be stopping any time soon in the near future, as his career grows from strength-to-strength. New York: The Novel, won the Langum Prize for American Historical Fiction in 2009 [5] and was awarded the Washington Irving Medal for Literary Excellence, by the Saint Nicholas Society of the City of New York, in 2011. Since I haven't read many books about history, London held a world of new and interesting information for me - what lives were like for upper classes, kings and working men, the rights of women, political turmoils, religious transformations, important historical events, epidemics, traditions, works of art. Because I'm new to the topic, can't say if Rutherfurd was accurate and in-depth about his narrative or not. I was reluctant to read Rutherfurd’s work when I learned the typical timespan involved in each novel. How to compress 1,000 years into the covers of a book and make it awesome reading is not a common skill. Rutherfurd has it in spades. Have read all his efforts. Bravo!! Reply All across the USA, people are showing up dead. The deaths don't appear to be connected in any way until one particular death occurs and gets the Secretary of Defense's attention. He arranges for a task force to investigate.Fascinantan je pokušaj, i makar u ovom prvom delu, osvežavajući, pitko i plitko pisan, informativan, interesantan i lep. Svako poglavlje zasebna priča. Svaka priča zasebni junaci. Svi junaci potomci onih prethodnih. Od prazne ostrvske keltske močvare i prvih rimskih dolazaka i Cezarovih osvajanja, preko postepenog i viševekovnog razvoja kraljevstva, viteštva, kmetstva, zaključno sa pojavom prvih znakova demokratskog uređenja s kraja dvanaetskog veka. The historical details of this book are excellent. I know a bit out history and there were no obvious errors or jarring anachronisms. I was never bored for a minute while reading his short stories, chronicling the lives of several London families. His clever use of identifying features for each family through time kept me oriented, but the characters themselves are each unique, flawed, and delightful. Louder and louder now their mighty ringing grew, clanging and crashing down the major scale, drowning out every puny tune, until even the dome of St. Paul's itself seemed to be resonating in the din. And as he listened to this tremendous sound echoing all around him, so strident and so strong, it suddenly seemed to Carpenter that he could hear therein a thousand other voices: the Puritan voices of Bunyan and his pilgrim, the voice of his father Gideon and his saints, of Martha, why even of the Protestant Almighty himself. And, lost in their massive chorus, for a moment forgetting everything, even his own poor soul, he hugged his grandchildren and cried out in exultation: 'Hear! Oh, hear the voice of the Lord!' Then all the bells of London rang, and then O Be Joyful was joyful indeed.' What a delightful way to get the feel of London and of English history.' READ REVIEW. Edward has lived in London, New York, New Hampshire and Ireland. He currently divides his time between New England and Europe. He has two children.
