The more recent GoPros added another reason to enjoy them: thanks to the SuperSmooth stabilization — introduced with the GoPro 7 and since improved — it’s possible to capture incredibly smooth videos at any time without the need for a bulky gimbal. This stabilized video looks incredible and is far beyond what you can achieve with a regular camera without this feature. So, if it’s just for photos, and you already have a top-of-the-line smartphone, and you aren’t worried about the environments you’ll be using it in, then you may not need an action camera. Of course, that’s a lot of “ifs” and an action camera definitely fulfills quite a different role from a smartphone. The UBeesize 67” Camera Tripod extends from 20.1 to 67.3 inches in only a few seconds. Therefore, this tripod adapts to a full range of different user heights and lets you compose your videos more creatively than ever before.

If you’re traveling together, then you’ll be able to easily fit at least two people in the shot and fully show whichever amazing travel location is behind you. If you just want some fun pictures to remember a trip, then don’t worry, it will do that well enough in more or less any situation. On the GoPro HERO9 or later there is even a feature letting you keep the horizon straight, which will compensate for angles up to 45 degrees. With that – there ya go – all of the action cam goodness I use daily! If you want to know more about my more general photography stuff (DSLR camera, sliders, etc…), then hit up my full photo post here, where I get into tons more detail on those pieces. In fact, that underwater pic above? I lose the pokey part of the 3-way on that photo – not realizing it till minutes later when the piece was long since buried under the ocean floor. I think I’m on at least my third one now. Still, I love it otherwise, and with being on the 3rd one I’m mostly learned my lesson on it.

In any case – there’s plenty of places around the web that do speed testing and all sorts of things on SD/MicroSD cards, but the dirty truth is no GoPro or Garmin action cam today comes even close to hitting the threshold write speeds for even 4K/60 or 5.7K RAW video. So I wouldn’t fret too much about that. Action cameras have wide-angle lenses and you may have seen GoPRO footage with a round fish-eye-like effect. That is great for action moments, but less so for general use. If you don’t like the fisheye style, no worries. You can easily choose between wide and linear shooting modes from the on-screen menu. The only downside to the GoPro 3-Way 2.0 tripod is that it’s relatively more expensive than other options on today’s list. Therefore, you may want to choose another option if you’re on a budget and want a cheaper solution. Nonetheless, this tripod is worth every cent because of its flexibility and adjustability. It was an extremely welcome move when GoPro started introducing touchscreens into its Hero cameras, but screens of course do need to be looked after, and this is doubly true for action cameras that are thrown into tough situations. I have previously had a Kodak PlaySport and a bullet cam that attached to my Archos 605 (with actual spinning HDD!) to compare this footage to ann the gimbal-ified footable does look smoother.

By the way, I highly recommend getting the GoPro shorty monopod accessory. You can use it to extend the GoPro just a bit farther out. It doesn’t seem like much of a difference but it will put it in a perfect selfie position. You’ll be able to easily take very natural-looking shots without your arm necessarily being visible in the foreground. RAW photos: Yes, you can take RAW photos with a GoPro! By default, it takes JPEG images that are already enhanced, but you can take RAW photos and make adjustments yourself in software like Adobe Lightroom. I actually use RAW mode by default as this gives the most options to edit later. However, keep in mind the RAW photos will always be in a wide field of view. If you want it narrow you have to adjust this yourself (e.g. using the “lens correction” tab in Lightroom). In the normal JPEG mode, the field of view will be whatever you choose on the GoPro.The problem most people make (including that 3rd article), is that incorrectly understand the terms “Megabyte” versus “Megabit”. When you do so, you have to remember to divide by 8. So the #1 silly-expensive pro level card that the article recommends has a I finally upgraded my action cam to a GoPro 6 a few months ago to go skiing / snowboarding with (with my family including to one 4 and one 7 year old) and to take to the Swiss Alps when I go there with some friend in June. I’ll probably use it on most bike rides for safety logging, too*. I love gliding the camera through a scene and achieving what almost looks like a cinematic long shot from a film. It really does make your videos look twice as good, and all without any need for accessories. It is without doubt a killer feature. However, a GoPro is still best for photos of landscapes or general action scenes and less ideal for close-up details or close-up portraits of people. Since it has no optical zoom (only a fairly ho-hum digital zoom), you probably also wouldn’t take one on a safari where having lots of zoom is a must. GoPro’s current lineup of action cameras offer some of the best video stabilisation around, but for cinematic camera movements, nothing quite compares to a dedicated gimbal. Compact and versatile, the Zhiyun Crane M2 S is a three-axis stabiliser that can be paired with your GoPro, smartphone or mirrorless camera. It offers dedicated stabilisation modes for recording smooth panning, POV and follow shots and even boasts a vortex mode for filming creative transitions.
