The Creative Writing audio lessons provided by the Open University on iTunes includes two interviews with Jane Rogers on her craft, both dealing with Mr Wroe's Virgins.

This was a very interesting read about Preacher Wroe and how he may have caused his own downfall when living in Ashton-under-Lyne, in the early 19th century.Even though he thinks it futile, he does not stop her assisting in the setting up of unions for the town's millworkers. He gave me James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury when I was too young to understand either, but old enough to fall in love with their language and their rule-breaking.

Sometime later, after a missionary tour in which the women accompanied him in his work, two alleged he had acted with indecency towards them and a trial by his elders subsequently followed. Yet another had been brutalised as a girl and her story is well written, you become witness to her evolving use of English as she recounts her story.I remember Jane Rogers talking about the book when it was first published and made into a TV series in the 1990s. After the choosing I hastened to speak to her, in the hope of bringing her to knowledge of God's love — but she fled at such a speed that she was lost to me. Jane Rogers chronicles the nine months these women spend together until accusations of indecency and the trial that follows bring Wroe's household to its dramatic end. John Wroe (19 September 1782 – 5 February 1863) was a British evangelist who founded the Christian Israelite Church in the 1820s after having what he believed were a series of visions.
