Opening up this book is like skinny-dipping in the brain of a genius – I never wanted to come up for air. If you live in a time zone that does not suit the initial broadcast time you can watch it at any point after the initial showing for two weeks.

When I was 24, there was a comedy forum that devoted hundreds of pages to being incredibly rude about me, my body, and who I was,” she says.I really hope this isn't the end of Josie Long's writing career and that there's more where this came from! She is Miranda-July-good, and I hope fans of Nicola Barker, Sheila Heti, Kelly Link, Nicole Flattery and David Sedaris will love this. We are over the moon to be hosting an event with comedian Josie Long in the centre of Edinburgh to celebrate the publication of her debut short story collection, Because I don't know what you mean and what you don't. Each of them is dealing with their own issues and tensions, and I found it fascinating to read about them, even if only briefly. But over sixteen stories I wanted her to break away from the minimalist Carver style, and hoped for more variety of tone.

There are stories here that are experimental and cutting, and a little more of that would be welcome. While Vanhoenacker takes us on fascinating journeys to Brasília and Cape Town, Liverpool and Jeddah, this is not just a travelogue of the cities in which he lands. The book closes with the hopeful optimism of a young mother, demanding of the world her children are being brought up in that it be a good one, by their rules. But now, she’s also siphoned some of her complicated feelings about leaving London into a new book of short stories, Because I don’t know what you mean and what you don’t.I got to the end the first story thinking what have I missed and what was that all about and this continued through the book.

Gaslighting, coercive relationships, social media, one-sided friendships, regrets, classism, obsession, unrequited love, escaping the rat race, and the horror of parenting children in a modern world are all brought to life in these short snapshots into the lives of everyday people.Published in May, it’s the culmination of years of writing that began in childhood but which took second place to other things, such as studying English at Oxford and launching a comedy career that saw her performing as a stand-up at the age of 14 and winning the BBC New Comedy Awards at 17. In fiction, she shows us a more conflicted side, more unsure of herself than her rousing and often political comedy suggests. I love reading them and also it feels like such an intellectual achievement when you’re exhausted with a child to have read something literary for 30 pages - you’ve done something and it feels good. Some of the sheer random whimsy may have been edited out of her work over the years, but what hasn’t gone is Long’s essential warmth, heart, and earnestness. What You Don’t] had a really long genesis, even though I’ve only written the stories in the last couple of years,” says Long, “When I was at university I really thought, ‘This is what I’m going to do with my life.

Josie's writing is everything I love about her stand-up: sharp and smart, hilarious and incisive, infused with love for the world and the complicated people who live in it. I’m hoping it will mean when I come back to writing a new show it will give me more strings to my bow there because you don’t ever want to get into a rut, creatively.

It's almost all first person present tense, with some stories written to a 'you' or with the love interest slipping between 'he' and 'you' as mood requires; I thought there were stories that Long could have toyed with a little and tried in third person and/or past tense, just to challenge herself and see where they took her.
