Unfortunately, throughout the many series and specials, Renwick's writing of the main female character playing opposite Creek has been deeply irritating to me as a woman. These elements do a lot to remind us about the show’s history and make this feel like an intentional effort to pay homage to the show’s past. But it turned out that his new wife and two of her three children were mysteriously killed in the home.

I can understand that the sequence certainly leaves Jonathan in a rather uncomfortable place, even if I think there is some justification for the choices he makes. Meanwhile Jonathan is being pursued by Patrick Tyree (Ryan Oliva) – a man he put in jail – with Polly and her friend Nina ( Jo Martin) preoccupied by a local scarecrow competition.

A designer commits suicide by jumping out a window after reading a bad review of his work, but that leaves the question of why he chose to throw his caged, treasured parrot out the window as well. Well, the latest adventure found Creek in Daemons' Roost, the home of Ken Bones’ Nathan Clore, legendary horror director with a dark past.

Within the house the ghostly presence of Jacob Surtees can still be felt, as Alison and her husband Stephen unearth clues to the mystery that become more challenging and opaque, the deeper they probe. Jonathan had assisted the daughter’s husband years earlier when he was accused of murdering his first wife and is now asked to help discover the truth of what happened and what the message might have been. As his health is failing, he decides it is time to tell his stepdaughter Alison the truth about what happened to her family. Clore, now living in Surtees old country mansion, is nearing death and incapacitated, so invites his daughter Alison – the only surviving family member following the death of his wife and oldest two children – to tell her his, and the house’s secrets.Warwick Davis provides enthusiastic comic support as an illusion-loving vicar, while Creek's much-missed duffle coat makes a cameo. Using his powers of deduction and belief that nothing is as it seems, Creek races against time to uncover a number of intriguing clues which lead him to the unbelievable truth and the revealing of one of the greatest acts of illusion he has encountered yet.

When Harriet is seen falling from a window, Emily is arrested on suspicion of murder, though she swears she is innocent. A nifty locked room murder where by Stephen’s first wife, who had been receiving death threats, is finally told she will die in her bedroom that night. Also on the scene are Mr Ryman ( Jason Barnett), a security camera installer; Phillipa Teller ( Rosalind March), carer for the proprietor; and the proprietor himself, filmmaker Nathan Clore ( Ken Bones). With his health failing, Clore summons his stepdaughter Alison to Daemons’ Roost to share with her the chilling truth of what happened to her family there. After two year's away, Jonathan Creek is back with a 90-minute special, reuniting Alan Davies with Sarah Alexander. As he aids in the supernatural investigation, Jonathan finds himself also confronting events from his own past. There’s also much talk of the crime-solver’s previous work with magic and even a subplot that stems directly from the Series 1 mystery ‘The House of Monkeys’.

In James May: The Christmas Reassembler (BBC4) there are at least as many elements, but the effect of piecing them together is considerably less entertaining. Guest stars: Dermot Crowley as Norman, Deborah Grant as Antonia, Zoë Hart as Rebecca Knape and Lorelei King as Justine Bailey.Vg’f abg gung V unir n ceboyrz jvgu gur zbgvir ohg whfg gung ubj ybat jbhyq ur unir gevrq gb unat nebhaq, fgergpuvat gur jbex bhg vs gur pbhcyr unqa’g vzzrqvngryl ghearq hc?
