I’ve always enjoyed the way that Mark Billingham portrays the dark underbelly of London streetlife and this thrilling novel is another great example. Mark Billingham has (I hope temporarily) set aside his compelling series featuring Detective Inspector Tom Thorne and given us instead In The Dark, a stunning novel demonstrating an even greater mastery of his craft.

It felt like Twattingham was saying "sure, you can have the candy in half an hour" and, after waiting patiently, he just ate it. And whenever I’ve been to the bar ‘Dirty South’ on Lee High Road, its clientele has been grizzled old locals and skinny Indie music fans, rather than teenage hoodlums. Again, this wasn't a big enough distraction to ruin the story, but it was enough to unsettle the pace of reading, especially as the pace and intrigue was kept fairly high. After seeing Sky shelve a popular TV version of Thorne starring David Morrissey after just one series he dismissed talk of a spin-off as a flight of fantasy. I really enjoyed this engrossing tale of pregnant DC Helen Weeks and her complicated home life, allied with a slice of south-east London gun culture.

That said, this was a pretty good read because there were lots of twists and turns, enough to keep the story moving. Some street dialect, some very bloody scenes, a blunt tone and a language you don´t want your kids to speak. Grieving, emotionally tattered and now almost full term, Helen conducts her own investigation into Paul’s bizarre death.

Although she’s just about to give birth, she doesn’t hesitate to follow the truth, even when that leads her into the grimiest and most dangerous neighborhoods. She manages to present DI Weeks as a sarcastic, fearless and wily operator at the same time as showing the vulnerable, grieving, scared and nine months pregnant Helen at exactly the same time. The scenes jump from one to the other and not always it is clear right away who the character is the reader is now watching. Heavner isn’t exactly mollified when Tempe, aided by retired police detective Skinny Slidell and a host of experts, puts a name to the dead man. Meanwhile, local DI Tim Cornish is under pressure to close the case and is keen to pin the crime on Linda's husband, Stephen.
