Kosuke doesn’t blame Shimizu at all and tries to cover for him when Shimizu is forced to explain to his superior why he incarcerated Japan’s most famous private detective. However, during World War II, he faced difficulties in getting his works published due to the wartime conditions, and was in severe economic difficulties. The book is translated by Louise Heal Kawai, who also translated the series’ first novel, The Honjin Murders.

First published in Japan in 1948 it is set in 1946, nine years after the events of the first novel, the Honjin Murders. As Seishi Yokomizo is acknowledged as the King of Golden Age crime fiction in Japan, it’s no surprise that this proved an intricately plotted murder mystery. Yokomizo was attracted to the literary genre of historical fiction, especially that of the historical detective novel. People are claiming that at my instigation, Ukai-san lured Hana-chan here and that he and I killed her together. Arrival at Gokumon Island brings an aura of heavy mist, an imposing landscape, unusual people who temporarily cow our detective.

PS: I still don't understand why Kindaichi's late friend would care so much for his three sisters though, those sisters aren't likable to begin with and they don't seem to care about their older brother's death much. We use Google Analytics to see what pages are most visited, and where in the world visitors are visiting from. I had great memories of The Honjin Murders, another lurid tale in a unique setting, also brought out by Pushkin Press and translated by Louise Heal Kawai, so I did have expectations from this book, and it didn't disappoint. I found this useful as it helped me to orientate myself and I also didn’t feel that this earlier mystery was spoilt. The lack of Streptomycin and other antibiotics also meant that his tuberculosis could not be properly treated, and he joked with friends that it was a race to see whether he would die of disease or of starvation.Gokumonto, or The Prison Gate Isle/The Hell Gate Isle/Inferno Island, is widely considered as Seishi Yokomizo's best work. với hầu hết các tiểu thuyết trinh thám mà mình đã đọc trước đó, mình đều thử nghi ngờ, suy đoán xem ai có thể là hung thủ thực sự.
