His short stories have appeared in a plethora of anthologies and his non-fiction has appeared in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and CrimeReads. Dead Silence could certainly be accused of being a paint-by-numbers sci-fi/horror tale, with a shallow cast and a well-worn plot.

There were certain elements of the story that I wish had been different or handled another way, but overall I had a good time with the book. The fact that my spouse and I are going to be buddy reading this off your review just fills my heart so, so much! Even though her enemies are close to finding out what really happened–and that could ruin them both. Claire Kovalik is days away from being unemployed—made obsolete—when her beacon repair crew picks up a strange distress signal. And, the best thing about the characterization was how well the author handled the main character, Claire. Claire further tells them that her crew had begun to experience these same effects, leading to Voller killing himself. There’s no complex scientific explanations, and as much as I love these in books, I loved being able to take a backseat on that with this book and still feel like all of it was plausible. Boarding the ship, it quickly becomes evident that something had gone horribly wrong aboard the Aurora. Their salvage claim could solve the entire team’s problems and take away all worries about the future.

It feels like this book wanted to be a mash-up of Event Horizon and The Haunting of Hill House, but ended up being more like Disney's Haunted Mansion in space. This is a novel about space travel, sure, but it’s also about other things: ‘‘Murder, suicide, confusion, and chaos without an explanation or any reason. Even though Claire is both a strong and enduring female lead, when she is presented with Ripley’s dilemma, she is terrified but accepts she has to face her demons, even if she is unsure what or who they are. I highly recommend Dead Silence to fiction readers that enjoy horror and are looking for a sci-fi setting that’s not too heavily detailed, and a book that’s hard to put down.

But, like Kate with her reading of science fiction stories, I do make exceptions for horror stories that cross over into my preferred genres. And if you throw in “Alien” and “Aliens” into this mix, you pretty much have “Dead Silence”, which makes it a familiar but engaging space horror novel. Some parts are absolutely terrifying, but the book eventually settles into a very intriguing thriller, with the suspense keeping you hooked until the last page. I wasn’t expecting this to be my first person POV— in Claire’s mind— but I got used to it pretty quick.Successful science fiction horror is not easy to pull off and this novel achieves it in some style and has the potential to pick up a wider readership beyond the horror genre.
