Perhaps this was due to the jumps in time or because there was so much story here to unpack, the real hero was the science fiction. Genetic engineering plays an enormous role in Cold People and is highly controversial in our world as well. Early into the narration of “Cold People “ I became aware of the magnificent creation of a brand new world by author Tom Rob Smith, and I found myself mentally living within its shadow. The narrator, soon established as Elliot Chase, then zooms out to address the reader directly, introducing the players—most importantly movie star Lana Farrar. How do these considerations stack up next to the eventual consequences of Fu’s eventual world alterations?

Knowing that man cannot survive in that climate, the new community decides to embark on a program of genetic engineering to create people who can thrive in the ice – Cold People.

Earth has been visited by alien crafts, and they have sent a message saying that the only place humans can live is the Antarctic, they have 30 days to get there. This is a story that really captured my imagination and the author has such a wonderful way with words that I was able to imagine his descriptions. Indeed, the novel does double duty as a survival manual, packed full of good advice—for instance, try not to get wounded, for “injury turns you from a giver to a taker.

Pretty predictably, in fact, but like I said, there is going to be a sequel if that ending has anything to do with it.

I suppose the invasion itself wasn't the point of the story he wanted to tell, but even descriptions of the lives of the survivors felt lacking. In Cold People, aliens swoop down to the earth and warn the entire population of Earth to make their way to Antarctica within 30 days or perish. I don't usually give up on a book this early (trying to read this over two weeks and still only on page 52), but there are too many great books out there waiting to be read and this one. He tries to imagine the setting up of a new community with new rules, overcoming the logistical issues of life in the ice. There perhaps should be a new aphorism that every novelist also has a post-apocalyptic or dystopian novel in them.
