Description

Taking the machine out of its box, I noticed that it felt quite weighty - usually a good sign of a well engineered product.

The drill provides excellent visibility with a laser crosswire that allows the workpiece to be precisely positioned before drilling and an LED worklight that keeps the work area well illuminated and free from shadows. I've now had this for 4 months, so i would like to think I can now give a sensible, calculated review. Save space when storing thanks to the workbench's easy-to-fold design that also makes it easy to transport. The depth guage is great, the electronic speed control works well, the clamp is useful and the size, reach, depth and chuck size all adequate. For drilling wood, the provided handle is fine, but when drilling big holes in steel, you need a lot of downward pressure, and with the wheel type, I find that difficult to consistently achieve. Packed with helpful features that will make your life easier while you work on your DIY or professional projects. This is great if you know you need to drill holes to an exact depth, which you can either eyeball by watching the display, or set the built- in stop-block for the desired depth. When you say "large" forstners, what diameter do you mean by that (a large forstner to me is 40mm+).

one third of a millimeter) from pushing left to pushing right, measured at the end of an 8cm long bit. Unlike other pillar drills, the baseplate doesn’t move – instead, a fixing towards the rear lets you slide the whole upper unit up and down the shaft via the wheel on the side, which is then locked off, letting you use the same wheel to depress the drill when in use. I also love that the speed is actually measured by the tool rather than just showing a number based on the position of the adjustment knob. Bunnings did replace it, at first they wanted to send it back for repair, after a heated discussion, the manager agreed to replace with a new one.

Good solid engineering, accurate drilling, very acceptable noise levels, small footprint, very easy assembly from box, quick bit change from keyless chuck. I have mounted the pbd40 next to my compound mitre saw on a metabo extending work stand so that the base of it is level with that of the compound saw. You tighten it by hand and turn a locking ring but I am sure I will get used to that and it seems to hold the drill bit securely and accurately.

I have not used a Bosch 'Green' in living memory, since learning very early on in a previous 'professional' life (Satellite installation - reinforced concrete, etc.A 'normal' keyless chuck would suit me better, but this one works and I suspect I will get so used to it that it isn't an issue any more. It's very good under load, with the drill constantly adjusting the speed as the torque increases and decreases to keep it at your dialled in speed.

Some struggle with the fact there's no handle on the wheel but it does have a big advantage in pen making. I do have to check that I have properly tightened the chuck and then use the lock ring but after a first few loose attempts I am OK with it. They say it's easy to use, great for drilling accurately and repeatedly, and is a good wood working tool.

IIRC the drill has 65Nm of torque in low gear, and will do a tolerable job with a 57mm Forstner bit in MDF. The PTA 1000 workbench provides flexibility on the job, especially for projects with large workpieces. One thing I would point out is I have to tighten the pillar lock as hard as I can to prevent any wobble.
