Harrison and Apple publicist Derek Taylor had a standing joke. Whenever either of them had an idea, they would quip "This could be the big one." "Something", written in mid-1968 on a piano in Abbey Road during a break from work on The Beatles, really did become the big one for Harrison. [115] When his mother asked him why, he had a hard time answering. Finally he said, "I keep thinking something will come in through the window." Huntley, Elliot J. (2006). Something” had its origins in “The White Album” sessions. George himself said that he wrote it on the piano during a break while Paul continued with some overdubs in another studio. Producer Chris Thomas recalls sitting at the harpsichord while working on George’s song “Piggies” at EMI’s studios on Abbey Road. “While George and I were tinkling away on this harpsichord, he started playing another new song to me, which later turned out to be ‘Something’. I said, ‘That’s great! Why don’t we do that one instead?’ and he replied, ‘Do you like it, do you really think it’s good?’” Dig a real hole. If you have a garden, or relations who have one, children could dig a hole in a flower bed (with permission!) be prepared for lots of worms emerging! This could be fun in a sandpit or at the seaside too. What kind of a something?" asked Mylo's mother. "Robbers, I suppose? Or ghosts? There's no such thing as ghosts, you know, and even if we had some robbers they wouldn't be interested in you." And Mylo's mother, who liked to explain things, went on to tell about the habits and customs of robbers.Make a phone call – using a toy phone or plastic pots joined with string have imaginary conversations about the hole. Children could pretend to phone friends or grandparents and talk about the hole and what might be in it. Written and sung by George Harrison, "Something" seemed to be inspired by Harrison's wife, Pattie. When asked in 1969 by BBC presenter David Wigg if she inspired the song, Harrison dithered, saying, "Maybe Pattie, probably." Age 3-7 A small boy loses a ball in a hole in the garden. Maybe something lives there, what could it be? A mouse, a badger, a mole, frogs or rabbits, perhaps even something really scary like a troll or a dragon? Everyone he speaks to has a different idea. Perhaps if he watches and waits he will find out….. This is a beautiful picturebook with a story to stir the imagination and invite speculation about what might be in the hole. With clever illustration of what’s above and (possibly!) below ground there is wonderful detail in the inventive undergound settings. Notice the cherry tree change as seasons come and go, spot the ball in the underground settings.
