The satire is less subtle than in The Snag List but it's stronger for it, and makes for a funnier, sharper read.

My Hot Friend is a contradiction in that it is both witty and warm while at the same time having a very powerful and meaningful edge.It was full of wonderful characters and an abundance of laugh-your-ass-off funny moments that gave me “Bridesmaids” the movie feels. All three women find themselves skirting on the periphery of their once solid lifelong friends and romantic partners. My Hot Friend, her latest fiction, comes hot on the heels of Where I End, her unforgettable horror novel published last year which recently won the Shirley Jackson Prize.

Sophie White hits you with some blunt and real emotions that make you sit up and take notice and you can see the author's funny and devastating style shining through. I could see something of myself in all of the characters at varying times as I read on, and I think it’s the sort of story that will resonate with so many of us. BUT it became clear that this wasn't going to be like an episode of FRIENDS and Sophie was weaving together some powerful portrayals of mental health, motherhood and even ethics and morals in social media influencers.All three women are in situations where they really need some support, but feel that those who they should be able to count on, they no longer can. White also shines a light on the true realities of early motherhood and isn’t afraid to show that it isn’t all cute insta friendly matching outfits and smiles.

White’s approach has the potential to come off badly, but she shows our characters pure grit, determination and emotional depth and never once veers off track. I’m a first time mother myself and have been so disappointed with some of my friendships since entering this new phase so was probably looking for something I could relate to. I hope it finds itself into my people's hands this year, we all need My Hot Friend in our lives in 2023. The book follows three women - Lexi the co-host of a podcast with her ride-or-die bestie, which is just about to go stratospheric, but can their friendship survive success? At which point this book is elevated from a funny and a relatable read to a much more important read as we learn more about Claire and witness her mental health degenerating.It is an ultimately hopeful book about living with - not being cured of - a brain that is a bit tricksy. Fate brings these women together as they try to manage the complexities of finding and maintaining friendships in your thirties and how hard it can be.
