Not only does Abnett portray the Imperial Guard structure beautifully but he also does the same job for those that serve within the regiments.The Ghosts fight on Voltemand, Ramillies, Caligula, Bucephalon, Typhon Eight, Nacedon, Sapiencia and Monthax.

So far the characters seem a fairly standard Mil-SF lot, including the honourable, commander who cares for his men.

The assault on the water-gate is repelled when the traitors open the floodgates and flush the Tanith out; however, Sergeant Cluggan leads a successful attack on the sanitation outfalls, creating a breach for the armoured assault.
