About this deal

Hi Sue — all the maraschino cherries I’ve seen have real stems, not plastic, so I’m not sure I can answer your question. For example, some reviewers mention that the red color rubbed off to reveal the white core, and some reviewer say that the plant was chipped. Usually, varieties that are lighter in color, such as Gold, Rainier, or Royal Ann cherries, are used.

I know they’re supposed to be cheery and fun, but these little cherries are really bringing me down. Luxardo Maraschino Cherries were first produced in 1905 and are still made in Italy using Marasca cherries and liqueur. I’ve certainly never seen a cherry tree with neon-colored fruit hanging from its branches, but it had never really occurred to me just how far from nature they might be. I believe I had understood “maraschino” or “maraschini” cherries to be an, actual, species of cherry …but it WAS clear that they were soaked/’preserved’ in alcohol (not corn syrup, et al.Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places.

Accordingly, most modern maraschino cherries have only a historical connection with maraschino liqueur. The ban on Red Number 4 was lifted in 1965 to allow the coloring of maraschino cherries, which by then were considered mainly decorative and not a foodstuff. It’s been years now since I’ve had them, and this is the first time I’ve purchased them as an adult.
